Canon "resurrects" original Digital Elph; monster sensor for new G1-X

A great many new cameras were announced at CES this weekend, but this is the one that caught my eye: Canon's "ressurection", as it describes it, of the original Digital Elph design and dimensions from the end of the last century. The new version fills out its $300 price tag with 1080p video, 12x Optical Zoom and 28mm-equivalent lens, but lacks the larger sensor of the more expensive S-series models. A cheaper companion model, the 110 HS, maintains a modern look and loses the superzoom.

Also interesting is the new G1-X, which ups the G-series sensor size from 7.6mm (1/1.7") to to 18.7mm—larger than Micro Four Thirds and only a few mm short of APS-C. Yay for shallow depth-of-field and low-light competency in a point and shoot, its relative enormity (and $800 price tag) notwithstanding.
