Ants and Stars: Bruce Sterling and Jasmina Tesanovic visit the Sardinia Radio Telescope in Italy

The Snowden Principle

  • August Culbert

Guys like these must have inspired this:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2SAFC4_KbW0

  • Gaucho85

With those mustaches these guys had two options, either be late 70s/early 80s musicians or be pedophiles.

    • Jasonclock

      Why not both?

  • http://twitter.com/rascojr Sergio

thats all I need to hear – purchased!

  • Frank Diekman

I can’t wait til the future gets here.  Then all music will be like this.

  • echolocate chocolate

Huh… I actually enjoyed the song, completely un-ironically. Does that mean I have bad taste?

I was also wondering what branch of Star Fleet these guys belong to. Based on their uniforms, something janitorial.

    • vonskippy

I thought they were Star Fleet Academy Cafeteria ladies?  In the 23rd century both sexes will have cheesy mustaches.

    • Mujokan

The best of this genre is dark, like this:

Edit, I screwed up some links.

      • Alex Rudnick

Holy cow, these are great. Thanks for the links! :)

        • Mujokan

Glad you liked ‘em! The Human League one is quite ahead of its time.

  • nixiebunny

That’s got to be the most obvious lip-synching I’ve seen in a long time.

    • millie fink

Right?! They don’t even bother to get anywhere near the mics.

  • Paul Bowen

Guy on the right’s Gaze Of Desire is going to be in my next nightmare, I guarantee it. (Is it me or is he a bit Buffalo Bill?)

Agree with echocolate chocolate – the tune is actually fucking great, ebay here I come.

  • Paul Bowen

Hmm, very little there and what there is is very expensive.

  • Peter Högberg

my god, that was awful! An absolutely horrible insult to my senses.
But that Tim and Eric tune August posted was great, thanx!

  • bo1n6bo1n6

That was pretty awesome and a little creepy.

  • Thomas Zaraat

I just spent more than an hour figuring out what synthesizers those were. In case any one but me cares here’s my conclusions

I think the standing dude was playing an oberheim four voice: http://www.hillscloud.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/fvs1.jpg

The other dude was playing a polymoog: http://www.synthfind.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/polymoog3.jpg

with the modules from a korg ps 3300 sitting on top for no good reason: http://www.nitrogen.myzen.co.uk/Korg/various%20Korg%20pix/KorgPS3300.jpg

    • kuanes

I spent the whole video going “Why is there a Korg module on top of the Moog?”

Is it strange that I found that to be the most bizarre thing in the video?

      • Rich F. (Korg USA)

I found it bizarre as well. Sure, PS-3300 looks cool, but they sound much better when they’re plugged in. :)

      • Mujokan

Well yes, it’s for the look of the thing, like Sweet Dreams. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qeMFqkcPYcg

      • Thomas Zaraat

That’s exactly what caused me to spend an hour looking at ancient synths.

    • http://profiles.yahoo.com/u/TGZ75URQ6DKTCNXV3RV36ZKALQ Matthew

“No good reason?”  Come on, haven’t you ever met a video producer?  Their producer most certainly said during the shoot, “Haven’t you got something with more knobs and dials on it?  Come, on you’re the Future World Orchestra!”

  • http://orbitnet.com JIMWICh

I think in this case, the future world is our beloved Topeka, from ‘A Boy And His Dog.”

  • snagglepuss

Actually, it’s a little awesome and pretty creepy.

  • Arthur Seat

I rather like it! Reminds me a lot of “I.G.Y. (What a Beautiful World)” by Donald Fagen, also from 1982.

Best line – “there’ll be Spandex jackets, one for everyone!”

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sogYgHlNnqo

  • http://2012diaries.blogspot.com/ tristan eldritch

That was amazing.  Effortless Hall and Oates/throwaway Fagen harmony pop, as sung by everybody’s dodgy/might be on the register relative.  Pure catnip for hipsters.

    • Mujokan

Also made me think of Hall and Oates.

  • Miss Cellania

This is really typical of the time. Steely Dan, Air Supply, Gino Vanelli, and the videos were atrocious -just simple shots of TV appearances while lip-synching. But that was state-of-the-art, for the most part.

    • Antinous / Moderator

More like lip-not-synching in this case.

  • http://twitter.com/bigbadchang Chang Terhune

In space no one can hear you scream through your mustache.

  • http://twitter.com/bigbadchang Chang Terhune

    1)  The guy on the right looks like my kid’s 5th grade math teacher.  Yikes.

    2)  WHere are the drums coming from?  Yikes.

    3)  Yikes.

  • GDK_in_DFW

Definately a group that needs to be at Moogfest in Asheville NC this October.

  • http://twitter.com/gths Graham Freeman

Where’s the drop? Where’s the WUBs and the DUBs?

    • .

Yeah.. I kept waiting for the drop, but it never happened. I feel cheated….
Or maybe that’s what Optimus Prime sounded like before his truck-nutz dropped.

  • http://twitter.com/cicadamania Cicada Mania

Quintron and Miss Pussycat are far better than this Tim and Eric skit.

  • http://profiles.yahoo.com/u/TGZ75URQ6DKTCNXV3RV36ZKALQ Matthew

I don’t want to be rude, but they didn’t really look like they were “burning with desire” for anything other than a nap.

  • dwasifar karalahishipoor

    Dreadful.

  • Chad Lake

This is why I never am able to post on BoingBoing (or Reddit, or any other site for that matter).  As soon as they hit the bridge I thought, “Zoinks! That’s where Donald Fagan got his sound from!”, then rushed to post. Only to find that I am hours and hours late.

I am way too slow for the Internet.

  • irksome

    Now if they’d only added a ukulele…

  • Sean Whelan

    Mustaches? Check.

I was just thinking this morning “Boy I wish I could be creepily leered at by guys with molestaches and valley girl jumpsuits..”  Thanks BoingBoing!

    • millie fink

      molestaches. Snirk!

    Justifiably obscure.

  • Brian Rook

    reposted… damnit

  • hacky

Anyone else notice their clothes were slightly different?   Somehow I find that strangest of all.

  • millie fink

    Dear BoingBoing,

Enough with your obsessive pasturbation! Onward to the future!

    Oh, wait.

  • immovableobject

    OMD, they’re not!

  • http://twitter.com/wi_ngo wingo shackleford

Quite amazing how the one dude is able to sing double backup vocals.

  • http://twitter.com/siouxmoux geeklinks

Its like Kraftwerk wannabes gone usa top 40 pop rock.

  • Guest

Wow, it’s an Easy Listening album by Sparks! I also like how there isn’t an audio cable or power cable in sight.
