All they had to do was start a group to legislate against pornography, and then they could watch as much porn as they wanted while working on it. See the Meese Report (1986), probably dozens of earlier committees and commissions and emissions.

<blockquote>"Why should I resign?" Mr Savadi asked on Tuesday. "The video I watched was of a woman being raped by four people. It was not porn."</blockquote>Even creepier.

Slightly different type of conservatives from what you'd find in the US, probably. But yeah, they're big on "family values" and "tradition". Yes, that means exactly what it seems to mean!

These weren't the ones directly involved in the Valentine's Day censorship drives or the pub attacks, but the ones who did those things are pretty close to them...

You missed the part where they were <i>conservative</i> politicians. I can't speak to conservative values in India, but in the US, conservative values dictate that the very existence of pornography in any form is immoral, let alone willfully allowing your eyeballs to gaze upon it.

I actually feel pretty conflicted about pornography - morality is just the study of good habits, and porn doesn t strike me as particularily healthy for humans. While it does seem ludicrous to fire public officials for watching porn, it is the case that they resigned (simply to cut losses for their party) - sure it doesn't necessarily bother ME that much that they handed around porn, but within their OWN professed code of ethics it is verboten - it is an internal contradiction, which is a concern, a concern over the nature of integrity, and more offensive than the "scandalous" behavior.

Personally I don't watch porn, but agree with you that it's not inherently immoral. (Discussion about how porn is often produced can be tabled for another time.)
As other posters have pointed out, however, what one does in private is none of our concern; workplaces (especially public ones) have different rules.

It was "during a session of state parliament", "while sitting in the state assembly". Oh wait, one of them was "minister for women and child development". So it must have been research.

Do you watch porn at work, and pass it around to your coworkers? If somebody sees you doing it, you can be sued for sexual harassment. Don't you think people would be upset if John Boehner was passing around porn videos on his phone to the other congressmen?

I have no problem with people watching porn in their private lives, but watching it at work is not appropriate.

I'd just like to point out that they were only watching some pornography, which probably everyone in this comment thread does without considering it immoral. I don't think it was immoral, and I'm not sure it's worth cheering for the downfall of my political enemies when I don't agree with the reasons. That seems too cynical for me.

Have no doubt the same thing is happening in Britain, in Canada, in the U.S. A damn good way to take out at least some of the hypo - crites. That is if our networks have any balls left at all.

It's always the politicians that use morality to get elected that turn out to be the most immoral people. I mean, Newt Gingrich, who cheated on each of his wives, is supposedly the candidate for "social conservatives" in the primary? Not to mention the "wide stance" bathroom pervert guy from a few years back...

It's Karnataka. I'm no expert on Indian politics, but I would guess that Karnataka is one of the more conservative states, ironically.

Edited to add, hoshit they were BJP? Nice. That's kind of like our tea party, except even more conservative.
