My understanding is that when Christianity was making inroads into Northern Europe, the standard sacrifice to the old gods was horse. You gave the gods the offal and had a good meal or three on the meat.

The ‘ban’ on eating horse meat was created to discourage worship of the old gods. In the south, at least on Sardinia, this wasn’t a problem, and if the same ban was instituted, it didn’t stick. Between Cagliari and Flumini I remember seeing three ‘Horse Butcher’ (in Italian, which I won’t mangle here) shops.

The horse I had there was at a wonderful restaurant, “Il Moru”, over on the southeast coast that served local food and dishes.

Horse is still on the menu in Sardinia. I only had it once, but I thought it was a lot like cow, but the cut I had was tough (on par with below average beef).

You do know when (and why) horse went off the menu in Northern Europe, yes?

The horse you wanna eat is cute and young and supple. The horse you actually eat was tied to a cactus and ate nothing but rocks and lizards for a month before someone finally did the humane thing.

Anthropomorphization of animals is cute. Not cute enough to make me want to stop eating them, though. Mmmmm, tasty animals!

That said, I probably wouldn’t eat a dog, though, because of the culture I have lived in all my life. I saw Andrew Zimmern eating some horse this weekend on TV, and I don’t think I am ready for that either.

I think I’m the only one who finds stuff like this weird, though it’s not as bad as non-animated animals and fruit talking, singing, or dancing, and it’s definitely not as creepy as those baby posters where babies are playing saxophones or are dressed as pumpkins, etc.

True story: Late last night by myself, wife and child asleep, low lighting and mellow music going on, then while going to the kitchen in the dark, suddenly and out of nowhere, my brain just lobbed a couple of images from Exorcist 3 and Hellraiser at me.
