These "Look of Disapproval glasses" from Thingiverse gives you a 3D-printable option for turning your face into an emoticon. They're the first contribution from user Plasma2002, and the Makerbot folks have put out a call for the entire spectrum of human emotion to be captured in 3D-printable glasses.

Here’s what I’m thinking for an emoticon glasses challenge:

* Be the first to upload any kind of emoticon glasses to Thingiverse with the tag “emoticonglasses“.
* Be the first to upload a particular kind of emoticon glasses to Thingiverse with the tag “emoticonglasses“.
* Be the first to tweet a picture of yourself wearing emoticon glasses at a bar with the hashtag “#emoticonglasses“

Anyone who completes any of the above three challenges gets 9000 internet points and everlasting online fame!

Emotive Glasses… and a challenge!

I write books. My latest is a YA science fiction novel called Homeland (it's the sequel to Little Brother). More books: Rapture of the Nerds (a novel, with Charlie Stross); With a Little Help (short stories); and The Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow (novella and nonfic). I speak all over the place and I tweet and tumble, too.

Wouldn’t simple paper printable versions be more accessible?

I kinda miss the beagle-ears, but otherwise I… well, approve.

Some compromises surely had to be made to get it to work, but it does seem that they didn’t get the design particularly correct.

If I wanted to actually express an emotion, I might consider arching my eyebrows instead. “Excuse me while I put on my emoticon frames…”
    That being said, clever.

These are great. Why isn’t there an optiker shop somewhere that will let me design and print my own glasses frames? I know exactly what I want (small ovals, slightly tilted up at the outside corners). You can order frameless glasses in any shape–why not the frames?

Oh, my daughter needs these so much. Then she could stop saying “shifty” or “awesome face” at random points in conversation, and just swap out her glasses instead.

      They’re up for sale at

These are knock offs of the original Look of Disapproval glasses done by Tim Saylor: http://www.etsy.com/listing/79821028/look-of-disapproval-glasses-shipped?ref=sr_gallery_2&sref=&ga_search_submit=&ga_search_query=look+of+disapproval+glasses&ga_view_type=gallery&ga_ship_to=US&ga_search_type=handmade&ga_facet=handmade
    This makes me sad.

I designed these back in September 2011 have sold about 300 pairs on Etsy.  Sarah bought a pair from me and appears to have made minor modifications to the design.
Here’s the link to my original listing: http://www.etsy.com/listing/79821028/look-of-disapproval-glasses-shipped

And here’s my first post on Reddit about it: http://www.reddit.com/r/shutupandtakemymoney/comments/jqodd/look_of_disapproval_glasses/

Thanks @facebook-1140534447:disqus for your comment pointing this out!

My husband actually designed them completely from scratch to fit his liking. We didn’t have a laser cutter at the time we purchased them (for a friend), but now that we do, we figured we could print our own. No reason not to. We had no intention of selling them. Brian put his design up on thingiverse for others to print/cut if they wanted. However, people who didn’t have a laser cutter were wanting us to just sell them a pair, so we did.
