Learytank
You can own Timothy Leary's sensory deprivation tank! The Samadhi Tank Company delivered the tank to Tim the month before he died. I don't know how often Tim used it, but I remember seeing it in the corner of his bedroom. Tim's tank is on eBay for a Buy It Now price of $20,000 with the proceeds going to the nonprofit Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies. In the late 1980s, I experimented with a similar tank a few times myself but stopped because it was causing me to de-evolve into a primitive man. Your mileage may vary. I bet you could get a pretty good buzz from drinking his old bathwater.

  • Navin_Johnson

    Leary reppin’ The Blackhawks.

    • xzzy

He should have bought the cryo freezer instead, and preserved himself so he could watch them win the cup again.

  • StAlfongzo

This is cool I would love to have it or at least try it. Altered States here we come!

  • StAlfongzo

lol just noticed the Blackhawks 69 jersey nice!

  • Douglas Rushkoff

Oh, gosh. I remember when they brought that over to the house. A Scottish guy named Craig put it together and filled it up on the back patio. A few days later John Lilly came to show Tim how to use it. He did the tank on a big dose of ketamine, and never went back in.

A couple of days later he told me it was as if his whole life were a book that had lost its binding, and he didn’t know which page to get back on.

“A couple of days later he told me it was as if his whole life were a book that had lost its binding, and he didn’t know which page to get back on.”

Right then, that sounds simply terrifying.

      • zarray

I’d like to imagine there will be a future trend of terrifying tank experiences being held in old out of business theaters because home movie viewing far outclassed cinema technology.

      • Marco Antonio Morales

A healthy dose of K will do that to you. Embrace it and it’s incredibly liberating, to the point of removing the fear of death and insanity. If you don’t embrace it and try to hold onto logic while you’re in there… it can become indeed a terrifying experience.

In the end, it’s all about letting go. If you don’t, you’ll hate it.

        • Jon Nixon

Oh thanks, I’m sure Tim would gave appreciated your advice. Kinda like telling Michael Jordan how to dunk………….

some forms of de-evolution (at least the de-naturalization of commonplace thoughts, like ‘capitalism is a natural phenomenon’) is I think the point.

  • Lobster

De-evolve into a primitive man?  Unfrozen caveman blogger?

      Or William Hurt. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Altered_States

I might be interested in one of these. How many kids can you fit in there?

you know dude jerked off in there thousands of times.  and he also relaxed to the point of creating some brown bobbers, if you know what i mean.  they don’t tell you about this stuff in Isolation Tank 101.

    • David Wyatt

He had it for a short time, only used it once.  He was elderly, not sexually motivated, and somewhat ill as he died a short time later………

If I were Freud I would say that you yourself are the person you are describing, while projecting your sick thoughts and perverted reality onto others…..Think about it.

  • Teller

If you have a weed-eater, it’ll decant a cask of Petrus in thirty seconds.

    • awjt

Uhhh, wrong thread, Teller.  Obviously you’ve been drinking too much un-aerated wine.

      • Ipo

         While eating weed.

        • Teller

Amigos, I was cross-stitching the two threads – the flotation tank could hold a cask of….hang on, blunt went out.

That will go real good right next to my William Burroughs’ orgone collector.

  • bcsizemo

First mystery booms and now a sensory depo tank….now all we need is large quantities of LSD.

What are Eleanor Roosevelt, Rachmaninoff and Willie Nelson doing with Timothy Leary’s flotation tank?
