In this quiz, you must decide whether 15 apps are for real, or completely made-up. From scatological humor to ethnic insensitivity and tasteless decor, the mobile marketplaces have ... some of it.

  • Westfakia

My iPad hates you right now.

    • http://twitter.com/twaggies Team Twaggies

Aww.. can I give your iPad a hug to make up for it?

  • musesum

I’m an iOS developer and I only scored %50.3 – am not worthy.

  • Halloween_Jack

53.3%. The problem is that, after the Shaken Baby app, absolutely no idea seems too stupid or tasteless to be an app.

    • Justin J. Snelgrove

You can get 60% just by assuming the planet is stupid enough that all of them are real. … I may or may not be a bit of a cynic.

      • Ipo

         I too thought that.

  • TheMightyMona

When you hit the ‘A’ button above the answer page is missing numbers 8, 9, and 10.

  • Westfakia

Has no-one else percieved the irony that this quiz was presented in flash?

    • Henry Pootel

Indeed I couldn’t read it on my iphone, my usual BB browser

    • teapot

Just because the apple god says you don’t need flash doesn’t make it so.

Considering that more than 50% of smartphones are now running Android the only irony I see is that the “premium & superior” device is missing features.

  • http://twitter.com/twaggies Team Twaggies

@TheMightyMona:disqus it shouldn’t. Are you opening in a new browser window? Looks fine on Chrome, btw.

    • TheMightyMona

Yep, most recent stable version of Chrome, and it opens in a new tab. Hold on…
      …
Just checked in IE 10, same result.

@Blueelm – we have it and it’s WILD

  • blueelm

I’m looking forward to my Jew Bling now though.

  • Bram Stolk

    Fail….
Article requires flash, so does not work for your target audience on mobile.

    • teapot

Who says iphone users are a target audience?

      Device selection fail.

  • MadLogician

    4 out of 15 :(

  • omems

60%? Really? Someone get on that Dradis!

    • chgoliz

      I know…I can’t believe the dradis one isn’t real.

  • Sebastian Wiers

13 out of 15.  Pretty easy if you have basic knowledge of what the app store will accept.  Hint – if it implies there’s trademarked / copyrighted material used without clear permission, chances are its not a real app. Pretty much anything else (except nudity, flash, and certain coding methods) is fair game and can / has been done.

    • retepslluerb

Not completely. The Jew Booth Pro might have fallen under “denigrating social/religious groups“, for example.

  • bigmike7

73%. I was sure Carpet Diem was the real deal.

  • http://shadowfirebird.tumblr.com shadowfirebird

I don’t see any ‘next’ button after the third page.  Ubuntu, Firefox, noscript.

  • http://twitter.com/amuchmoreexotic Ben

That cable connector app would actually be useful for non-techie people (who would probably never think to download it).

  • John Stephens

I’m going to go with “All are real”.  Even if they didn’t exist before this quiz came out, someone has designed them after getting the idea from here.

  • profinity

Yes, @azmountaintroll:disqus , because having an idea is way harder than architecting and coding a mobile app, designing and deploying the web services that keep it live,  generating artwork and sound effects, and then submitting it to the appropriate marketplaces and promoting the app so that it gets any attention.

There’s this big group of iPhone and Android developers who have spent hundreds of hours learning to code, spent thousands of dollars on developer program fees, developer conferences, programming books, hardware to run and test their code, etc.  And all we need to get rich is someone’s idea about poop, or ‘who’s your daddy?.’

  • http://twitter.com/ASong408 Andrew Song

Don’t forget TapThat for all your NFC phone sex needs.
    https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.tapthat

  • PKMousie

Yes, profinity, having an idea is way harder than architecting and coding a mobile app (walled gardens have their perks), designing and deploying the web services that keep it alive (if any, and they aren’t built in), generating artwork and sound effects (if any), then submitting it to the appropriate marketplaces (just a few clicks these days) and promoting the app so that it gets any attention. That stuff is either easy, or common to any business venture. Coming up with a good idea is hard.

Any stupid idea will make money in the App store. My apps are pretty dumb (albeit crafted with loving care) but sell enough that I’m going to quit my day job and just go for it full time. I’ve paid for all my Apple hardware with app sales! It’s a self-sustaining hobby.

And you know what? One of my new app ideas is indeed about poop. And it will sell. Just watch me.
