Thanks to Endotoxin's comment on yesterday's post showing Kid Koala's turntable performance of Drunk Trumpet, I now know of the existence of KK's cover of Basin Street Blues, one of my favorite songs of all time, and performed herein with great virtuosity, accompanied by a delightful animation.

Kid Koala - Basin Street Blues

I write books. My latest is a YA science fiction novel called Homeland (it's the sequel to Little Brother). More books: Rapture of the Nerds (a novel, with Charlie Stross); With a Little Help (short stories); and The Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow (novella and nonfic). I speak all over the place and I tweet and tumble, too.

KK is totally a happy mutant.  His live show had a huge flip-pad full of comics and messages, then he played a song similar to this video but the sound was a mosquito buzz and he wrote it to accompany the kid’s book he and his girlfriend wrote.  Kinda surprised he hasn’t been covered in BB before, come to think of it.

I love Kid Koala’s work, and never knew he’d covered one of my favorite Louis Armstrong songs – that being said, I’m glad he could perform it on a turntable instead of a live instrument.  That song might have been rooted in the classic blues structure of 1-4-5, but it grew into a mighty complex oak that generally crushes most casual musicians.

I don’t like it. I just thought the song was butchered.

Thanks for the shout, Cory. You might enjoy another artist on the Ninja Tune label (Same as KK), named Mister Scruff: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MS_CLIF1h-o . Most of the folks at Ninja Tune do great stuff, such as DJ Food, or DK: https://vimeo.com/19005861

Mr Scruff kicks major ass! I’ve been dropping his tracks for years. Check out “Sweet Smoke” on Ninja Tune:  http://www.beatport.com/track/sweetsmoke-original-mix/1662496

Wow, I get to feel hip for a change! I blogged the haunting “Basin Street Blues” way back in 2005 [pats self on back].
