A World of Thinking Robots - 1946 Kirby and Simon comic

From Real Fact Comics #2 (1946) - a Joe Simon and Jack Kirby 2-pager about robots who will undertake undesirable occupations such as secretary, housekeeper, and professional athlete.

A World of Thinking Robots

  1. see that guy in “Robot Control”?  yep, you guessed it, he’s a robot.

(when i see robots depicted as driving vehicles (middle distance of wonderfully classical artwork, by the way) i always think “why isn’t the vehicle itself a robot and skip the clunky humanoid robot driver?”  but then i assure myself that this must be the way it’ll be in order to have the tomb paintings make nominal sense)

  2. I can’t stop looking at the lettering, especially “A Department of Science and Invention” part. Hats off to Post-War Typography!

  3. This is typical of superficial futurist thinking: everything as it is now except artificial people do the dull work.

    1. And yet, not so far off. The “secretary” is just taking dictation: do humans even do that anymore? The robot football players are weird, but I don’t fault them too much for not predicting Robot Wars instead. And the robot housekeeper, well, so far it only vacuums, but still.
