Here's a blooper reel of Ricky Gervais and Sesame Street's Elmo cracking wise and crossing the line.

Gervais + Elmo = Hilarity on 'Sesame Street' (via Metafilter)

I write books. My latest is a YA science fiction novel called Homeland (it's the sequel to Little Brother). More books: Rapture of the Nerds (a novel, with Charlie Stross); With a Little Help (short stories); and The Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow (novella and nonfic). I speak all over the place and I tweet and tumble, too.

    brilliant improv there.

Oh, never mind that, I wanna see Elmo with Karl Pilkington.

If you enjoyed this you should see “being Elmo” it is a great documentary about the man who puppets and voices Elmo. It is a great “dream come true” story. I belIeve it is streaming on netflix. Cheers!!!

I am not a fan of Mr. Gervais or Elmo, but Being Elmo is a very good film and Kevin Clash is a terrific puppeteer (and it shows even here).

Agree, I think having watched Being Elmo makes this even funnier

Have to agree.  ”Being Elmo” is a wonderful biography/documentary.  We watched in on Netflix a few weeks ago (it’s on the streaming service) and my entire family watched and enjoyed it, from my 11 year-old son, 14 year-old daughter and my wife and I.

It just makes you kinda happy to watch it.

I love how Ricky Gervais’s just-being-himself bits are often so creepily consistent with his character on The Office.

I love Sesame Street, and this clip really highlights why. The quality of the puppetry really is spectacular, I mean you grow up with it and take it for granted, but those characters are alive.

As if in some deliberate effort to drive that point home with dramatic counterpoint, they are currently padding out about 15 minutes of each episode with the most awful, unbearable cgi thing about a flying fairy school, that includes characters from the live action part of the show. It’s like seeing them as zombies.

How many likes am I allowed to add? As a lifelong Sesame Street connoisseur, it’s difficult to sit through those parts. A major reason I had children was so people wouldn’t be weirded out that I watch so much Sesame Street, and now they’re killing it.

  • Spriggan_Prime

Man I want a whole season of just this show.

I think Elmo needs a show somewhere between Fernwood Tonight and Larry Sanders.

  • Marco Antonio Morales

What I find awesome is how everyone (as Gervais does here) engages in direct conversation with the Muppets, totally forgetting about the guy underneath actually doing the moving. Watch Gervais’ body language, he’s totally chummy with E. :)

    • wizardru

That’s the power and skill of Kevin Clash as a pupeeter (and other muppet performers).  If you watch old interviews with Jim Henson or the documentary ‘Being Elmo’, you see how even with the puppet obviously sitting on the arm of the puppeteer, the character takes over.  We forget the perform and engage with the puppet.
