[Video Link] I like the band Best Coast because listening to them makes it feel like a California summer no matter what season it is. They have a great new album out, called The Only Place.

Last week my friend Ava and I interviewed them at the Wiltern Theatre in Los Angeles, a couple of hours before they performed. Our friend Maureen Herman (the bass player for Babes in Toyland) shot and co-edited the video.

Eurovision 2013: An American in London

The technology that links taxonomy and Star Trek

Kudos to the band for making the big time – however, the audio quality of this interview is very bad (harsh and sibilent) and I can understand little of what’s being said. The guy band member (Phil?) is especially unintelligible because he mumbles – the video quality however is top notch. Maybe this presentation can be remastered for maximum understandability. It’s a shame, they seem like good kids

    • mtdna

I agree. Any kid with the hubris to share a video without professional production values should be flamed into utter discouragement. However, people who can’t use punctuation correctly should be revered as insightful critics. Right, Einstein?

      • einsteinatthemall

Punctuation: ? On, message. Boards / Oh. Please”

Correct punctuation is a sign of an imprisoned mind.

Honest feedback is how you learn to improve your skills. Little point in getting allot of exposure to your work if everybody only says it’s top notch but doesn’t really mean it.

I had to tune down the volume a Lot to get the sharp tones out of the female singer’s voice, I wonder if they were using one mic for the band instead of two, maybe with a limited pickup field, which forced them to turn up the output volume so you could hear Phil’s voice as well.

  • mtdna

I wish I had the boldness to do that when I was a kid. I couldn’t even look people in the eye at that age. As a matter of fact, I still can’t…

Sarina and her friend are pretty lucky to be able to get this kind of experience. Nice interview and those were some interesting questions.

Sarina seems lovely, but how is featuring her work on a prominent site like this anything other than nepotism?

    • Mark_Frauenfelder

The apprenticeship model of nepotism is a wonderful thing, and Boing Boing is a family business. Sit back and enjoy it, Stephen!

Hey, so long as there are no illusions about it; nep on!

I love Best Coast!  What a fun interview!

  • magister418

Like kids/ young adults doing this! Great experience for them, plus a fresh/ new perspective for us the viewers.

  • journey46

my first reaction to the opening song is to sing one word repetitively to the bass line.

dumb, dumb, dumb, dumb, dumb, dumb, dumb dumb.
    dumb, dumb, dumb, dumb, dumb.

    not impressed so far.
generationally speaking… oh, i give up.
this box spell checks generationally as incorrect.

    give me an F
    and it’s one, two, three…

    • Mark_Frauenfelder

tldr; Those kids with their “yeah yeah yeah” music.

      • journey46

        whatever !

  • east2idaho

One of the main reasons I read BoingBoing is that I so often find stories that make me feel better for being part of the human race.  This interview did that for me in spades.  Nice people.  Nice job.
