Mophie's $130 Juice Pack Pro doubles the amount of juice to 2,500 mAh (along with the size) for people who never want to recharge their cellphone again. The good: days on a charge. The bad: all that tactical special ops ruggedry and greebling, if you ask me.

The technology that links taxonomy and Star Trek

Speaking as a guy who has busted a dozen cells, my Casio Brigade is the toughest  phone I’ve ever owned. There is something to be said for “tactical special ops ruggedry and greebling”……

    • Pedantic Douchebag

I’m a big fan of ruggedry and greebling; but then, I’m also rather clumsy, and have a tendency toward dropping electronics into wells and the like.

      • snagglepuss

I’m a bit clumsy, but not a dozen phone’s worth. You have to understand that you are talking to a man who was once the ONLY known injury from an earthquake. Several of my friends say that the main reason they hang with me is because it’s entertaining to observe the staggering variety of weird, odds-defying bad luck that seems to follow me around…

        • Pedantic Douchebag

I once accidentally flushed a phone down a toilet at O’Hare airport. The conversation when I tried to use my phone replacement insurance was hilarious.

          • snagglepuss

I’ve had six different brands of cell phones, because after the second phone has been stolen, destroyed or whatever, they always drop you from the insurance program…

  • Halloween_Jack

I want all of my gear to look as if it was specifically designed to aid in the slaughter of xenomorphs. My toothbrush weighs seven pounds, but I feel so much more secure as its knurled grip leaves indentations in the palm of my hand.

    • robuluz

That phone just needs to display a small green tracking light with concentric circles regularly spreading out around it, and you’re set. Also, do you live on top of Manhattan Chase?

    • bcsizemo

Now all you need is an M41A pulse rifle to attach it to and a sonar/movement app.   Preferably an app that gives you Bill Paxton quotes as the aliens get closer…”I’ve got movement, they’re all over the place man.”

  • Robin Pritchett

I have their slightly less expensive 2000 mAh case and it is not all butched up like this one, its pretty much smooth. This thing speaks to me though, and what it says is “I’m not going in your pocket without a struggle”.

  • quazi

Didn’t know “greeble” was a word. Thanks!

(..off to go overuse it :)

    • seyo

I didn’t either and I’m very excited to overuse it as well.

    • noah django

I also learned this word today.  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greeble

If you are more inclined to the DIY/Altoids tin look, Adafruit’s MintyBoost is a cheaper alternative https://www.adafruit.com/products/14.

  • seyo

The two most offensive greebles (yes!) are the ones around the ear piece and the home button. They look like they could be easily trimmed off with an xacto. It could probably done very smoothly too. Or, you could do it in an exaggerated fashion, making it look like damaged sustained in combat, when you were “in the shit, man.”

  • jandrese

One additional bad:  $130.  That’s one wicked expensive battery glued to an ugly phone protector.

  • http://www.disoriented.net/ angusm

Does it come with anodized tungsten anchor points so I can attach it to my SWAT-style equipment vest alongside my ‘tactical’ pen and my heavy-duty Maglite?

  • Patrick O’Neill

I’ve owned a couple of Mophies, and while I really appreciate the extra battery life (especially when traveling and using the GPS a lot), I don’t think I will be buying another one.  The weak point for me has been the micro-USB connector. Both of my Mophie cases eventually broke at that connector – it is just not very robust.  And it is also a pain to have to carry a separate cable for plugging in when it is in the case – why couldn’t they just find a way to use the standard dock connector?  (I imagine because then they would have to pay Apple $$$?)

    • http://www.creaturesoflight.com dagfooyo

I’ve owned two.  The first one’s connector broke.  Then I got the Juice Pack Air ’cause Amazon reviews said the connector was sturdier.  And it’s been working great for almost a year now, couldn’t be happier with it.  I actually like the micro USB connector better than an apple connector ’cause it works with all my old motorola chargers and basically every other cell phone charger I encounter these days.  And I was able to buy two spare cables online for something like $5.  Makes it actually easier to charge it and saves the apple connectors for my other devices.

Finally, a device to put under my Panzer Tank’s tread to keep it from rolling downhill if the emergency brake ever slips. // I do love a device where it’s obvious that form fallowed function, dang the consequences. I want one.

  • acidrain69

As an owner of a Juice Pack Air, I’d say this was necessary. I liked the extra battery power, but I wanted some kind of protection for the phone. And I couldn’t do both; it’s either find a sturdy battery pack or put a protective case on the phone. This does both.

Having said that, I used the juice pack air on my 3G iPhone. I’ve moved on to a 4S, and I’m happy with the battery life, for now. And I like the (possibly fake) Element Vapor Pro case I’m currently using.

  • Jeff Pulice

‘days’? not so much. with gps and bluetooth on, my Juice Pack Air gets me to about 5 PM. I don’t even use it that much at work.
I am investing in the Ureka at Kickstarter, bigger battery and slimmer body. Hope it gets made…

Does anyone who owns one know how to get it open. Mine seems to be stuck, and there’s no instructions on how to get the damned thing apart.
