Reddit user Lycerius has been playing the same game of Civ II for 10 years. But his distant future's Orwellian grind—there are even three nuke-thrashed superpowers stuck in an endless war—might be about to come to and end: the community is unraveling all the possibilities of the freakishly advanced saved game at a new subreddit dedicated to it.

1700 year nuclear war between the communist Celts and the fundamentalist Vikings and Americans, creating a pestilence ridden and mostly uninhabitable world.

Sounds like a great movie to me.

you forgot one big drama 700 years ago: the red revolution, destroying the millenia old democratic society

To defeat the menace of Hrothgar Atomcleaver, and preserve freedom, methods other than constitutional ones may have to be employed…

It was necessary to survive the Viking nuclear holocaust.

Better than one based on Battleships, that’s for sure.

And here I thought I was a dedicated Civ player. ;)

I think he made a mistake going Communist instead of Fundamentalist after the tech race was over. Who doesn’t love guaranteed civilian happiness and fanatacism to support your imperalist war effort?

Which reminds me of the observation I made while discussing games like Civ 2 and Victoria 2: it always seems to be the best strategy for the game (if your goal is conquest) to have the most ruthless and oppressive fundamentalist state possible. Undermine liberties, suppress any rebellion, doublecross your allies when they’re weak, etc.

The problem is that some people seem to be playing this strategy in real life.

The problem here is being focussed on ending with a win…

The noble thing to do – the thing which is better for humanity and the planet – is to LOSE.

Needs a losing position where the maximum number of your population and resources survive (building assets which will improve their lot and survive even as you collapse?).

    Give in to the guerillas!
