Above, experimental musician Nik Colk Void's short film "Swing." Simple but effective! Void also encouraged people who bought her 7" "Gold E" to play the handmade sleeve as a "record" itself, and send her video of it for use in a future composition. Void is a member of Factory Floor and also made a fantastic collaboration with BB pals Chris Carter and Cosey Fanni Tutti, titled "Transverse".

    Steve Reich’s Pendulum Music (1968).

    • Maverick

Seconded. When an idea’s already been explored, artists need to up the ante. This isn’t very interesting commentary on Reich’s piece.

      • lbigbadbob

I actually like the piece a lot, but it seemed like we should at least acknowledge the clear inspiration for it.

        • http://ok-cleek.com/blogs cleek

do we know Void knows anything about Steve Reich’s Pendulum Music ?

if not, we can’t say it’s the inspiration.

It’s entirely possible she was raised in a box by deaf, dumb and blind pinball wizards.

            But unlikely.

I might almost give her a pass for not having heard of Max Neuhaus (Fontana Mix: Feed was one of my favorite things to listen to in college), but a musician not having heard of Steve Reich? Not having heard of Jimi Hendrix or Sonic Youth is just as likely.

[updated upon realizing that "Nik" is not "Nick" nor male]

@boingboing-48ab2f9b45957ab574cf005eb8a76760:disqus i’ve heard of Steve Reich, but i couldn’t name a single thing he’s done.

            yes, i play guitar.

      • Navin_Johnson

The guitar is an improvement over the microphone imho.

      • timquinn

That is like saying there is no difference between Hendrix and Les Paul. Maybe so, except art and music are about standing there in the moment and enjoying the experience. Turn off your nagging inner critic and watch again. There are volumes of differences and ‘commentary.’

      • Bill

Commenters need to up the ante.  This isn’t a very interesting commentary on lbigbadbob’s comment.

    • PaulMorel

Thirded. This is just a rehash, 50 years after the fact. It’s fine sound, but it’s basically pendulum music with a guitar.

      • avraamov

…despite it sounding different – some might say better. i personally prefer the sound of this one, but the theatre of the other.

    • David Pescovitz

Very cool! Reich never ceases to amaze me. Thanks.

      • avraamov

which considering his career, rather throws the comments here into relief. Reich is nothing if not repetitive, some would say.

  • snagglepuss

What the hell…I’ve got an AWESOME photo to paste here, but copy and paste suddenly ain’t co-operating.

It’s too good not to share. Anybody here want the link, and they can put it up themselves ?

When you start to type a comment, a little “+ Image” appears in the lower left.

I think it would be more effective if it was a mannequin in a flannel shirt swinging from a noose while holding the guitar and the piece was titled “rock is dead.”

Edit: Maybe seeing “Rock of Ages” over the weekend has colored my opinion somewhat.

  • musicianvoice

She explores. No one can explore? The Edge uses “delay” in a way that is described here http://www.amnesta.net/edge_delay/, so I can’t use this to explore, experiment, record my songs, change the technique?

    • avraamov

i agree. this obsession with ‘copying’ and ‘originality’ in art is a dead end.

  • Preston Sturges

    Freeee Biiird!

  • sigdrifa

To be honest, I wouldn’t call either of the two “music”. More of a sound experiment. I always thought for something to be called music a process of composing would be involved, but hey. Who am I to know. Stupid mistake.

    • Tim Drage

The idea that music has to be ‘composed’ is restrictive beyond even any normal conservative definition of music, pretty strange statement.

      • sigdrifa

I don’t know what’s so strange about that, and how it goes beyond “normal conservative” definition of music. I think rather it’s strange that random noise, such as the feedback of an electrical guitar or a microphone should qualify as music. If that’s the best a musician can come up with to get attention on the www, then he / she should think of a new career.

  • snagglepuss

    …Best I can do.

LOL. The guitar’s A-string is out of tune!

I did something in between this and Reich a few years back: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RoCehe3EGiE&feature=youtu.be
