NASA's Messenger probe has found Mickey Mouse on Mercury. Messenger has already transmitted more than 100,000 other images, so perhaps Pete is up there somewhere too. Pete's my favorite. (Los Angeles Times)

So is Disney going to try and sue the planet Mercury, or just assert ownership?

    • Andrew Singleton

      I’d presume ownership.

After the 2008 sighting of Mercury’s Babylon 5-ish “Spider Spot”, Mercurial solons set copyright worshipterms to a mere 5,000 years in an effort to head off threats from Earthican lawyers.

Unfortunately, Earth never got the message since Mercury’s press release was handled by Harmoniums: “Here I am, here I am, here I am. So glad you are, so glad you are, so glad you are.” Thus feeling unconstrained, mercurial Earth solons raised copyright extension to its current terms: a zillion years or the day that Walt thaws, whichever comes last. If you feel strongly about this, send a donation to the EFF (Extraterrestrial Frontier Foundation).

       Clearly this is prior art.

Hey now, I don’t think it’s prudent for moderators/contributors to make the best joke on first post… that would require the rest of us to think of a throwaway joke of equal/lesser hilarity – and given the time of day that this was posted, I would say this is an impossible task.

Hi kids! See that dial on your suit’s wrist joint? That turns red you’ve got 25 seconds to shelter in place, because you’ll never cycle an airlock in time. See that other dial? Don’t ever let it turn red, because that means you’re out of air. Pressure check your suit at the start and end of each shift, don’t eat food from the fridge that isn’t yours, and remember: you are now sterile. Welcome to hell!

If you had snuck that in the background of a space opera people would be saying it was just too heavy-handed and obvious.

But it’s “off model” i tell ya’

How long before Disney receives a letter from a lawyer claiming to represent the geology of Mercury…?
