In light of recent images released by CERN, reader Snark^ reports that the Higgs Boson particle has been given a new nickname by Redditors. Behold: The FSM Particle.

RAMEN!

On the off chance that you did not spend the 4th of July glued to your computer, you should be aware by now that the Higgs Boson particle might have been found. Maybe. Or, rather, at least one of the Higgs Boson particles might have been found. It's confusing. If you want some help cutting through the hype, I recommend that you check out the great links in our round-up of Higgs Boson news and analysis.

Maggie Koerth-Baker is the science editor at BoingBoing.net. She writes a monthly column for The New York Times Magazine and is the author of Before the Lights Go Out, a book about electricity, infrastructure, and the future of energy. You can find Maggie on Twitter and Facebook.

Maggie goes places and talks to people. Find out where she'll be speaking next.

I’ve already talked with a right wing dimwit who thinks the scientists discovered a “gawd particle” that proves the Catholic gawd or something or another, mumble, jumble jumbo and thinks the librul media is “keeping it under wraps” as best they can because it proves gawd.  He somehow also simultaneously is capable of thinking it’s a huge deal because the media is saying it’s a huge discovery of the “gawd particle”.

I didn’t want to give him cognitive dissonance on his conflicting (ironically quantum?) thoughts on the librul media or anything else…  so I silently glazed over and left the room.

Just thought I’d show the antithesis of the scientists who pulled this off.  But, one thing is for sure, I need to talk with less Fox News watchin’, right wing dimwits.

You should have used an analogy he’d understand to illustrate that ‘God Particle’ doesn’t mean what he thinks it means, such as explaining how his Silverado truck isn’t /actually/ made of silver.

It’s called God Particle because it is God, so any other god is not needed, and therefore proven to be non-existent.

the only thing worse than a right wing bible thumper is a left wing athiest who thinks he’s smarter than everyone else. Stick to being silent and glazed over.

Sorry, but I don’t take orders from lessers.

… the only thing worse than a right wing bible thumper is a left wing athiest who thinks he’s smarter than everyone else.

CelticBrewer, I hate to give you cognitive dissonance;  I really do…

But, I’m not an atheist. I’m not left wing.  And, I certainly don’t think I’m smarter than everyone else.  On the contrary, I know I’m below average in intelligence.  I try to make up for my handicap with tenacious creativity.

How do you make up for your stupidity?

    Hello, string theory.

  • jrp230

So if a force/particle is interacting with a Higgs Boson, it acts as a particle and has mass.  If it knocks loose from the Higgs Boson, it acts as energy.  Is that the gist of it?
