Nash Bridges didn’t do anything in particular to offend any of us in the area, either the way they filmed or the content of the show. Yes, they shut down streets or intersections, but they did so with some thought for the neighborhoods etc, over the course of years, from what I saw. And it was purely fiction, and didn’t represent itself as real true SF or Bay Area, though it was authentically set (and filmed) here.

As has been pointed out, you can film a Star Trek movie in SF without anyone particularly noticing, but try and run a lousy fake scripted reality show and annoy the neighbors? … Zzzzzap.

But when Nash Bridges was set in San Francisco, the shooting was done all around the city, often in the scuzzy under-the-freeway-bridges area near my Soma office. One of the department secretaries just had to watch any time they were filming near enough to our windows.

On the other hand, when Monk was set in SF, most of the shooting was done in Toronto or LA or Vancouver, with occasional outside scenes in SF.

A few weeks back the stars of “Auction Kings” (I think) found some rocketry items in a storage locker.

This resulted in what, to an informed rocketeer, were some real head-slappers. At one point they consult local rocket expert “Tim,” who considers their request for a ludicrous amount of money to buy their already-built large rocket. He must of course “test fly” it to make sure it is OK, and after a successful flight lays out $2,700 in cash.

“Tim” was actually Tim Van Milligan of Apogee Components, a well known and respected vendor. He noted afterwards that it was all scripted. He didn’t actually buy the rocket.

When The Real World was set in SF all the shooting was done indoors because local hecklers made it impossible to film in public. You have the power to do what’s right, San Franciscans…

I had a friend who naively got on a marriage reality show and the producers introduced a fake “friend” to harass and badger his fiance because there “wasn’t enough drama”.

The reality shows are fabricated and everyone should know that by now.

The act of observing an event changes it….. so good luck with that!

Let’s see if the advantage of free exposure outweighs the cost of attempting to do business under the gaze of the unblinking eye. As for the show…. I’ll take a look if it makes it to a second season.

I was at the Winery on Treasure Island in San Francisco Bay for July 4th, and they were filming this show there. We could tell this group of people were not … regular. Then the 6 cameras appeared (all the better to capture every nuance) and the music stopped (so as not to interfere with their bon mots)
