For $20, Bleep is selling a 55 track "Guide To Electronic Music" compilation starting from Olivier Messiaen and Pierre Shaeffer in the 1930s and 1940s through Daphne Oram, Morton Subotnick, Throbbing Gristle, Afrika Bambaata, Phuture, and Basic Channel, all the way to J Dilla and James Blake. (Of course it's not comprehensivem, nor does it claim to be.) The project drew out of a Facebook timeline chronicling that same history. "A Guide To Electronic Music" (Thanks, Vann Hall!)

As you guys probably discovered, you can download, as well as stream any of those pieces. When you have nothing but time, check out all the “sound” stuff available on ubu >> http://www.ubu.com/sound/ (TapeBeatles, Public Works, People Like Us, and Tellus tapes especially recommended!) Also, poke around for films you can stream or download… (Sun Ra!)

Adding that everything on Ubu is 100 percent legal, it’s not a shifty torrentz site or anything. many many great arts resources there.

It looks great, but, 100% legal, really? Top of the sounds page, The complete run of all 10 LPs from Brian Eno’s Obscure Records 1975-78.

I wish Ishkur would get off his ass and finish Version 3.

-Ishkur if you read this, fix your damn forums – it’s been a month.

Assuming we’re talking about the same fellow, it’s Olivier Messiaen, whom I know too much about because I wrote a few papers on him back in music school. The dude liked birds.

    • David DeMaris

I was about to chime in on the name. As it happens right now I’m listening to Alain Jehan, who was mentioned in the book “Conversations with Olivier Messiaen” as a favorite composer deserving of more attention along with O.M.’s teacher Charles Tournemire. If you haven’t checked them out and if you’re fond of early Messiaen you might have a listen.

It’s a great compilation, but it’s also severely lame that they had to include Divine’s rip off of Blue Monday as they don’t have the New Order original in their library!

That photo was clearly swiped from a Terry Gilliam animation. You know the one. His hair’s parted differently, though.
