I haven't been to a comic book convention in over 15 years. I don't want to deal with the crowds. But after listening to Benjamen Walker (host of the terrific WFMU radio program Too Much Information) report on the academic comic book conference, Comics Philosophy & Practice held at the University of Chicago in May, I think I would love going to it. Small attendance, no hype, and my favorite cartoonists.

The conference was held during the NATO invasion of Chicago, which may have accounted for the low attendance.

One of my department heads alerted me to this, and I’m really glad it’s getting press.

That being said, there are other groups doing academic investigations of comics and popular media. I’m the programming chair for the Comics and Popular Arts Academic Conference which is held at Dragin*Con in Atlanta, GA. We’re an outcropping of the Institute for Comics Studies, and this year will be our Fifth working with D*C.
