The technology that links taxonomy and Star Trek

Is that a legit error, or are they playing on the ‘because of reasons’ meme?

    • Aaron H

is ERB (“embedded ruby”) — it will evaluate the contents of the var “reason” (presumably a string containing the reason for the downtime)  and render it to the output stream.

The fact that it’s literally showing means that the ERB interpreter isn’t working, but for some reason enough of the Rails stack is functional to get to the point where it DOES know where to find that file. Rails is a bit funky with how / where it puts its files, so the framework is necessary to instruct the web server how to find files like these.

Any Rails gurus have any ideas?

      • dmcinnes

Their Rails servers are likely not running and their web servers (nginx/apache) probably point to this file in the event of FAIL. It probably has those fields interpolated by some manual process that hits the rails server to generate the page. Rails servers are not running, we get the raw version.

google-talk and a few others have had (possibly unrelated?) outages.  i for one blame/welcome our olympics overlords.

  • EricSchrepel

Well at least they expect to be back up by . I’m going to use that exact logic the next time somebody asks me to do anything.

But where can I communicate my angst about Twitter being down when Twitter is down?

    • N Poppleton

       Tumblr!

      • http://goodsharer.com/ Aloisius

That’s funny because Twitter’s status page http://status.twitter.com is run on Tumblr and it keeps going down. :)

How is twitter even still a thing?

    • Aaron H

Don’t you have some band-I’ve-never-heard-of to go listen to?

    • theophrastvs

how is ‘still a thing’ still a thing?  (“y’see the thing is…” oh for the return of Mad Magazine’s “Horrifying Cliches”)

      • Donald Petersen

Oh, for the return of Mad magazine.

    • http://www.nathanhornby.com/ Nathan Hornby

Must be the millions of people that use it daily.

      Just a guess though.

      • CrackWilding

Millions of people use toilet paper daily. You don’t see me doing Internet searches for pictures of it.

Unless you are my ISP, of course.

        • http://www.nathanhornby.com/ Nathan Hornby

          What?

        • emacsomancer0101

I am your ISP, and I’ve been meaning to ask you about your toilet paper fixation. Also, why aren’t you are Twitter?

    • http://halfbakedmaker.org Robert Baruch

      Twitter is a .

  • Grant Gould

But don’t worry, because it will be back up by %= deadline %

Well I usually comment here using Twitter as my login . . . and I have a 2:1 like:comment ratio over hundreds of comments — so PLEASE do not ‘like’ this comment. I’d hate to see all those likes go to the wrong account. :D

      D’oh!

  • http://goodsharer.com/ Aloisius

The SMS interface for posting to Twitter is still up as is their streaming API service (so something like Tweetbot and Tweetdeck still can receive tweets).

It is not the fault of Reason, only its isolation.

Maybe it’s collateral damage from knocking out Realtime Mitt Romney wealth accumulator. Does any body know why it got knocked off the air shortly after the information ran in BB?

Twitter is currently down for .
Twitter is currently down for Prince fingers %= reason % Prince fingers.
Twitter is currently down for Prince fingers mod assign reason mod Prince fingers.
Twitter is currently down for Prince fingers where Prince fingers > reason
    or
Twitter is currently down for zero where Prince fingers < reason

Comparing Prince fingers to reason is really sort of a complicated thing.  I mean, reason is helpful.  But given the above, what I've already said, it's clear I think Prince fingers are probably more important than reason.  Prince fingers really are about rock stars playing peek-a-boo and the mystery of pants with butt cheek holes.

    Right.
