On Diving Heritage, a brief history of 1882's Carmagnolle armored diving suit, inspired by medieval armorers. This thing is a science fiction costume-designer's dream.

Alphonse and Theodore Carmagnolle (via How to Be a Retronaut)

I write books. My latest is a YA science fiction novel called Homeland (it's the sequel to Little Brother). More books: Rapture of the Nerds (a novel, with Charlie Stross); With a Little Help (short stories); and The Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow (novella and nonfic). I speak all over the place and I tweet and tumble, too.

    Don’t be a slow poke, Mr. B.

Angels don’t wait for slow pokes.

wow. and to think I’m having trouble designing and building a simple table with all of today’s technology.

No pictures of the hands? Lazers? Edit… Mittens!!

An image search for Carmagnolle brings up a number of wonderful things!

Only one hand. The other is a drill/gun/whatever you want it to be.

  • fuzzyfuzzyfungus

Aside from the patina (and the contemporary ability to produce dome-style viewports) it actually looks surprisingly similar to contemporary hard suit diving gear… Very similar bulbous articulated joints and proportions.

Take a gander at the Neptunic Custom suit. The photo is very interesting.

Actually, this it has more in common with this suit. http://www.oceanworks.com/hsCommercial.php

Come on, it’s a diving suit and you avoid the “wet” qualifier for the type of dream? FFS

  • timquinn

    Cory,

good job on not mentioning “you know what.”

  • baronkarza

Costume designer’s dream maybe, but a diver’s nightmare! I hate to even think of how much this monstrosity weighs. More than a coffin!

    • fuzzyfuzzyfungus

I have the sneaking suspicion that this sucker is one mistake away from weighing exactly as much as a coffin…

I guess humans had many more eyes back in 1882.
