Public housing officials in Pittsburgh are hunting for whoever has the key to turn off a fire alarm triggered yesterday evening. As of 8 a.m. Monday, it's been blaring for 10 hours straight; if you have the key, please get in touch with the Allegheny County Housing Authority. [WPXI Pittsburgh]

I find it sad that in 10 hours no-one has found another way to disable the alarm.

Locksmith?  Fire axe?  This is really pathetic.

Locksmith for the win. FTFA (updated 11:50 a.m.): “Around 10 a.m. a maintenance worker and a locksmith were able to shut the alarm off. The maintenance worker said he has a key to turn off the alarm but does not have a key to get into the room where the alarm panel is located.”

I don’t get it either. Don’t these people have hammers?

I mean, it’s not like the alarm works right now.

The alarm is probably built to withstand large varieties of physical damage – after all, it has to keep working even as the entire building is burning down around it.

Something tells me if this were not public housing they would have found a way to disable the alarm.

Pffft. I live in public housing, and I’m pretty sure that my housing’s associated public would have decided it was most definitely Hammerzeit about 9 & 1/2 hours ago…

Has this never happened before? In most of the public housing complexes in my neighborhood (and there are several), the fire alarms go off incredibly often.  I’m very impressed with the fire department’s ability to continue taking these calls seriously given how often they occur.

And this is the same government you think can handle health care and make it work?  :)

Cut the power and reconnect. Works well.
