Waxahachie, Texas's excellent Webb Gallery is hosting an exhibition of more than a dozen vintage sideshow banners! Titled "The Greatest Show On Earth," it runs until September 9 and can be browsed online too. Above left, "Crime Wave" by an unknown artist, circa 1930; right, "2 Face Man" by famed sideshow artist Snap Wyatt, circa 1940s.

“The wages of crime is death”? What is the wages of bad grammar are?

Well, that all depends on what the meaning of ‘is’ is.

Huh? Were you unaware that this is an adaptation of Romans 6:23, “For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord” (King James)? I’m sure the creator of the poster simply expected that most Americans would be familiar with the quote, and giving it that Biblical tang would arouse more interest.

In other words, it’s the Bible’s fault, not the poster artist’s.

I love that style. I tried to imitate it for something once – (NSFW)
