Adam Savage's toolbox

BB pal Adam Savage of MythBusters liked using antique leather doctor's bags to hold his tools. But the bags couldn't handle the 50+ pounds of tools that he needed while working at Industrial Light and Magic. So he remade the bags out of aluminum and added scissor lifts for easy reach. "The finished boxes housed everything I needed, but I repeatedly rebuilt the insides until finally no tool had to be moved out of the way to get to another," Adam wrote in Wired. "That’s first-order retrievability."

  1. Adam seems like he would be the perfect party guest. If your big screen TV or beer cooler went on the fritz, he could either repair them or smash them to bits with his Hulk toolbox.

Is “Mythbusters” even on TV anymore? The last I saw of it was over the weekend. They were repeating the MB’s “Shark Special” where the boys made big fake metallic sharks and were hysterically ramming them into a pint-sized boat. Not exactly science or statistical, but there’s nothing like seeing a fake shark head slamming into the stern of a tugboat for a few laughs

I’ve always thought of the “Mythbusters” boys as true heirs to comedians such as Galagher, a genius who tends to smash before he thinks…nice, heavy toolbox!

It hasn’t stopped for like, a decade. They do take a summer vacation though :D

New episodes start in the fall.

  2. Even though I’ve never made anything more elaborate than a juice-bottle bong, I suddenly want one of these toolkits now.

    1. Thurgood Jenkins: The MacGyver smoker is a very handy guy to have around, especially when it comes to reefer.
McGayver Friend: Hey, man, we’re out of papers.
McGayver Smoker: All right. Then get me a toilet paper roll, a corkscrew and some tin foil.
McGayver Friend: We don’t have a corkscrew.
McGayver Smoker: All right. Then get me an avocado, an ice pick and my snorkel.
McGayver Smoker: [Friend looks at him funny] Trust me, bro. I’ve made bongs with less. Hurry up!

  3. This toolbox is only valid if the scissor-lift can be dropped with a trigger on the handle while carrying it.

  4. Honestly I’m not seeing a lot of tools in there.
I could probably fill all the stuff I have for doing electrical work in one, maybe plumbing in another, and then a general purpose one?
I’ve just over taken a room of the house that has become my workshop…sadly no finished basement or garage.

    1. I believe he has two of these, so double the amount of tools, and keep in mind this is a model-maker’s toolboxes, so we are talking dozens of tiny files etc., there is a complete list of the contents in his article. =)

    1. Yes to this. My dream fridge would be like 2 ft deep and 7 ft wide. Or maybe a series of shallow drawers like a morgue.

… sometimes I have to step back and listen to how crazy I sound.

  5. There is a video online somewhere where he details his construction and tells  the story of the toolbox. I would look for it but if i remember correctly it was part of a longer talk he gave. Might’ve been the one where he talks about building his Blade Runner replica gun, i don’t know.
