A new version of seminal Mario clone The Great Giana Sisters is on its way. Project Giana is a modern take on the genre, however, bearing only a passing resemblance to the originals. John Walker at RPS:

It’s not quite the original team, as sadly the man behind the original – Armin Gessert – died in 2009. Appositely, his last game was a version of the original Giana released on the Nintendo DS! This new game seems to genuinely share little but the name and elements of the concept, but the results look absolutely beautiful. It’s a puzzle platformer in which you can control not only the main character, but also the mood of the world you’re in. Giana can switch between “cutie” and “punky”, which changes how a level is approached.

    This looks absolutely splendid!!
Great example how a clone can surpass the original, because this looks far more creative and beautyfull than the newest Mario game (don´t get me wrong, I absolutely love Mario).

That looks incredible, but the music shifting back and forth is nauseating. I could not play this for that reason and for the reason that I have better things to do.

Agree.  I’m not sure what causes the shift, or if it has any effect on gameplay.  It would be good if it was optional.

It will be possible to lock the music to one or the other.

There’s a secret about game music you don’t like: turn it off. The list of games where the music stays on for me is very short. I do kinda like the concept of the music shifting as well as the visuals, but not that music and definitely not those guitars.

    Oh snap!
I played the hell outta this on the Amiga.  Those tomboy Giana sisters scared me thoughwhat with all the sudden growth spurts! I never understood why it was such an obscure game. Years later, of course – I discovered that everyone else had played, pretty much, the exact same game on Nintendo.. /8bit nostalgia

I’m glad this is getting a bit more coverage, I’ve put some money towards it and have played the “sampler” version and it really is very pretty. The game mechanic is quite unique. It doesn’t bear a great deal of resemblance to the original, but it looks intersting in its own right.
