It also allows independent control of pitch, which has been helpful in the past with readers with very low or very high pitched voices.  I listen to audiobooks while cycling and if the pitch of the reader's voice is just wrong they can get drowned out in wind noise, so it's helpful to be able to tweak them up or down.
