The above structure is allegedly a greenhouse surrounded by a safety perimeter to keep the children away from said greenhouse. Redditor Syyraxus's post is called "So my brother in law built this... thing, I had no idea what it was until my sister told the children to keep away from the greenhouse as it wasn't safe. Greenhouse..."

I write books. My latest is a YA science fiction novel called Homeland (it's the sequel to Little Brother). More books: Rapture of the Nerds (a novel, with Charlie Stross); With a Little Help (short stories); and The Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow (novella and nonfic). I speak all over the place and I tweet and tumble, too.

The Snowden Principle

  • sqyntz

looks safe to me… but then i don’t have children

  • http://twitter.com/writebastard Ian Wood

There’s something in the DSM-IV about this. I’m almost sure of it.

    • L_Mariachi

That’s what I was thinking: this post treads perilously close to mocking the mentally ill.

  • blueelm

    Greenhouse… eh?

  • stillcantfightthedite

In before long rant against need for regulating the construction of small buildings in one’s own backyard.  Children are too safe these days!!!

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Tim-Escobedo/1043685245 Tim Escobedo

    okay

    • EH

      more like…

  • sqyntz

duh, it needs some duct tape

  • Kevin Pierce

Snow load may become an issue.

    • GawainLavers

He’s cleverly solved that problem by not including a roof.

Seriously, though, it’s bad enough that I kind of feel awkward about making fun of it.

  • Navin_Johnson

Obviously the bro-in-law is an artist and he’s called it “Greenhouse”.

  • blueelm

See the cat? See the cradle?

  • Kevin Pierce

    Business before pleasure.

    • sqyntz

perhaps the greenhouse is necessary to grow more pleasure

    • TacoChuck

I am not sure what you are implying, but I am here to tell you, pot isn’t going to cause to build something like this.

If you are that high, you aren’t going to build anything at all.

  • Snig

Dissing other people’s religous icons is not cool.

    “Ph’nglui mglw’nafh Cthulhu R’lyeh wgah’nagl fhtagn”

    • Donald Petersen

Yeah, there’s something faintly non-Euclidean going on with that architecture, but I can’t tear my eyes away.  La!

      • http://evilbobdayjob.blogspot.com/ Deidzoeb

Darnit, I was going to say he found the plans for this greenhouse in the sunken city of R’lyeh.

  • joshhaglund

If this guy were more into gardening than identity theft, i think he’d build a greenhouse like that. http://craphound.com/images/screen_shot_2012-10-18_at_11.26.44_am.png.jpg

More related to the OP than I’d have liked, Reddit’s “our servers are hosed” page is far less appealing than Twitter’s Fail Whale.

  • bo1n6bo1n6

Looks up to code to me.

  • corydodt

He needs to build another perimeter around it, to keep kids away from the safety perimeter.

  • nixiebunny

He should have invested in the Hazard Fraught greenhouse. Much higher quality.

After the greenhouse is finished, there is a fresco at the church which needs some touch ups, too.

    • cdh1971

I get your humour  but my opinion, and I say this Not with Irony, but with Conviction, I find the elderly lady’s ‘touch-up’ to have more originality, artistic merit and soul than the original rendering.

I came to this understanding after much, much Nerd Rage, you know the kind, the kind demonstrated by the animated gif of the person banging head to keyboard to the point of blood squirts.

  • http://www.facebook.com/joe.witherspoon Joe Witherspoon

a perfect example of what I call Precarious Structures Architecture. Excellent work.

    Yes – _Alleged_

    Tits or it didn’t happen.

    Or……

    ‘Brother-in-Laws gonna Brother-in Law

Or, the original reddit poster was, you know, being a reddit poster.

    ‘reddits gonna reddit.

  • SoItBegins

    If that’s a greenhouse, I’m a cactus!

  • http://naamaak.blogspot.com/ naam

    It is lovely!

  • Ryan Lenethen

Either your brother in law sees other dimensions all the time, he’s an alcoholic, or both. Of course if I saw the other dimensionness of the elder gods every day of my waking life I might turn to the bottle as well.

  • IronEdithKidd

I know a few carpenters that will certainly *headdesk* if they see this so-called “greenhouse”.

  • alissa mower clough

It’s a shame Sukkot was several weeks ago. With a little thatching, it’s a fine booth…
