  That was basically my thought. and,… Why: 1) should we cover a baby’s nipples, 2) should we allow men’s nipples to be seen but not women’s, 3) would a mermaid bother with a bra seeing as she doesn’t (typically) have anything covering her cloaca?

    Y’know, it seems to me that excepting those circumstances when they’re perched on rocks above the surface, singing young seamen to their doom, most mermaids wouldn’t even need the bra for support while they’re swimming around. Right?
    
    Still, in this instance, the top piece is useful. Without it, young Ariel might just be mistaken for a normal (if preternaturally adorable) infant halfway wriggled out of her blankie.

    Isn’t the point of most costumes that they convey a visual concept by using familiar tropes? If a woman wears a costume with a mask, do we compare it to a niqab?
