Top Georgia GOP lawmakers host briefing on secret Obama mind-control plot

Our friends in the Tea Party have revealed President Obama's sinister plan for a "United Nations-run communist dictatorship in which suburbanites will be forcibly relocated to cities."

On October 11, at a closed-door meeting of the Republican caucus convened by the body's majority leader, Chip Rogers, a tea party activist told Republican lawmakers that Obama was mounting this most diabolical conspiracy. The event—captured on tape by a member of the Athens-based watchdog Better Georgia (who was removed from the room after 52 minutes) —- had been billed as an information session on Agenda 21, a nonbinding UN agreement that commits member nations to promote sustainable development. In the eyes of conservative activists, Agenda 21 is a nefarious plot that includes forcibly relocating non-urban-dwellers and prescribing mandatory contraception as a means of curbing population growth. The invitation to the Georgia state Senate event noted the presentation would explain: "How pleasant sounding names are fostering a Socialist plan to change the way we live, eat, learn, and communicate to 'save the earth.'"

        If only. Libertarians are dead-set against “force” — as long as they get to define what “force” means. Starving people or making them homeless aren’t considered “force” by libertarians. As a result, a libertarian who would insist that taxation is theft would have no ethical problems getting what they want by denying food and shelter to those who need it. So it’s not a way to dismantle hierarchies (if it was it would be anarchism), but a way to enforce them on terms even more favorable to the very rich than rule of law already is.

Something like 2.5 million people die in the US every year, giving us a rough total of 12.5 million people that have died while Obama has been in office.

As we’ve been in a recession for most of Obama’s term in office, I think it’s safe to conclude that all of those deaths were caused by starvation due to people being unable to find work.

Basically, Obama is worse than Stalin. He’s done NOTHING to keep people from dying.

Here’s the thing: Obama’s regional rural plan will probably lead to bad stuff, as it is in all probability simply another way of integrating (to an even greater degree) rural economies to the corporate capitalist world system. Nothing conspiratorial in that, mind you- since the early nineteenth century systems of state and capital have been using a wide range of ‘public-private’ (the current euphemism) to bring marginal communities, markets, natural resource reserves, and so on, into the full capitalist system.

Obama’s policies are corporatist (like pretty much every POTUS before him to lesser and greater degrees), which is to say, capitalist- the rise and expansion of capitalism (be it ‘private’ or fully state-run as in the USSR) has always depended upon state intervention and support. Rural economies are brought to heel, either slowly and quasi-voluntarily, or through the deployment of direct, violent force (think past and current ‘land grabs’ and enclosure movements).

The Tea Party, then, is on the right track, sort of, in being suspicious of these things. They go off kilter, however, in imagining some sort of sinister secret agenda and God knows what else being planned, when in fact the processes by which states forcibly and implicitly expand centralized capitalism are neither hidden nor mysterious. They aren’t advertised, though they could and should be. I think that many people in the Tea Party, like many people in liberal movements, have their hearts in the right place- a mistrust of centralized power, a desire for greater liberty and autonomy, a love of local communities and place, and so on. There’s a lot of false consciousness and downright craziness mixed in there, on both sides mind you.

    Sure, some Tea Partiers are driven by overt or residual racism. But it would be simply reductive to attribute everything to that, or to imply that every Tea Partier is just an embittered racist or is only driven by a fear of people of color. That would be like suggesting that the only reason people in the Middle East support Islamist or other radical movements is because they hate infidels or something, when in fact all sorts of sentiments and ideas are driving such movements, from socio-economic concerns to religious to the flatly xenophobic.
    
    I’m not say most, or any, Tea Partiers are going to come out swinging against the forces of global capital or against the police state. I’m saying that some of their sentiments point in such a direction, and that with dialogue and education, some such folks can drop the kookiness and false consciousness and move in a more positive and constructive direction, alongside other people from across the political spectrum.
    
    This has already happened, I might add, in some particular situations. Tea Party types came together with radical greens, civil libertarians, and other to defeat a recent proposition in Atlanta that would have looted taxpayers to line corporate pockets and wreak environmental and social destruction. Likewise, some of the opponents of the Keystone pipeline have come from Tea Party or Tea Party-like ranks. So it has happened on a limited scale, and can happen on a larger one. Or at least I hope so.

This talk of Agenda 21 stuff would seem crazy, were it not for the fact that it is a real UN document, and that many of the things that are supposed to be done to conform to the documents goals are being done, at the local, state and federal level. Many of the goals do seem to go just beyond the development of a sustainable planet, favoring government/corporate control over essential goods and services, as opposed to human rights and reasonable freedom of choice. Especially worrisome are the sections on food and water, which Boing Boing has covered in the past: the seemingly odd reaction of local governments to front yard gardens, for example. Similar restrictions on food self-reliance are part of Agenda 21 documents.
