I came back from a trip to Sweden with some reindeer leather gear, but I don’t think I ever convinced most of the kids in my school that reindeer were real.

They seem, however, to have somehow completely extirpated alligators from the vicinity. Last time I was in Florida I was stuck in a convention center abutting Disneyland, and all I ever want out of going to Florida is to see an alligator.

Interestingly, there are armadillos in the Tod Browning ‘Dracula’. They were meant to be other creepy critters the castle. And yes, that area of Europe does have its very own type of ‘dillos.

I’m not the Disneyland enthusiast that Cory is, but I’ve been to Disneyland once and Disneyworld/Epcot once (and I saw It’s A Small World at the 1964 World’s Fair, and once was enough, thanks :-)

But in the fields near the Disney World parking lot in Orlando, there were armadillos! First time I’d seen them live and in the wild, as opposed to in zoos or as roadkill in Texas or random exclamations in long Jefferson Airplane instrumental jams. Made the trip worthwhile, as did the family get-together.

Breaking the apparent trend from this past halloween, there does not appear to be a “Sexy Armadillo” costume for pets or for humans.

“Stuck in mud” may be a rare event, but since it makes fossilization much more likely that it would be otherwise, it’s hardly surprising when fossils are found to have been produced in “stuck in mud” scenarios.

Discovering the existence of “screaming hairy armadillos” and “pink fairy armadillos” has enriched my life beyond the ability of words to express.

I’ve only been lucky enough in my life to see a “default armadillo” and a giant armadillo. The latter isn’t exactly a glyptodont, but pretty damned cool for a mammal in the Anthropocene.
