Thanks! I’m happy to have the straight dope; I do like to strive for anatomical accuracy where possible in these things. Obviously there is nothing to be done about the “pregnant” appearance of the belly, unless you’re prepared to do a Cinderella’s-Stepsister and cut off your heel – and a certain amount of license is sometimes necessary in adjusting for aspect ratio (I’m well aware, for instance, that even the most generic of sharks probably has more teeth than I managed to squeeze in on this one). But getting the nostrils in the right place is an easy fix – in fact, I can post that correction immediately as Errata on the club’s Knit-Along page, so the error will be limited to the prototype. Which I can re-knit, one of these days. Hmmmmm… I sense a blog post coming on.

Thanks Tsarina of Tsocks for the response! The nostrils are indeed ventral in sharks (some exceptions are hammerheads, in which they’re on the edge and at each tip of the “hammer”). And thanks for being so gracious about it too :-)

For those who missed the “:-P” at the end of my comment – it was meant to be humorous, and I did say they’re very cool. Also, they’re the kind of thing I’d actually wear – just because I’m not only a biology nerd but crazy enough to do silly things like that because then my students remember more about the class I teach.

Dudes. If you’re so worried about the non-anatomical correctness of the nostrils, then you can put your yarnover (or whatever stitch it turns out to be) on the underside of the shark.

Re availability, there is a follow-up post at http://www.tsocktsarina.com/blog/?p=481 explaining the status and the plan in considerable detail.

Re nostril placement – on most of the shark pictures I studied they were so close to the edge of the snout that it was impossible to tell whether they were on the top or on the underside or indeed at the edge itself, so I put them where they would be visible. I’m certainly open to correction, however – I don’t claim any particular expertise in shark anatomy – and will be happy to revisit this next year when I’m preparing the public edition.

Very cool. But if those are the nostrils (for the left-foot shark) they need to be on the underside of the snout, not on top. I know it may seem like a tiny detail, but if I want to wear these for my Vertebrates classes, the sharks need to be anatomically correct :-P
