Rob Kutner and the Levinson Brothers (and friends) released It's OK To Do Stuff, an album parodying Free to Be You and Me. Guest vocals include Steven Page from Barenaked Ladies and Jane Wiedlin of The Go-Gos (featured here singing the album's themesong). It's a $6 MP3 download on Amazon.

I write books. My latest is a YA science fiction novel called Homeland (it's the sequel to Little Brother). More books: Rapture of the Nerds (a novel, with Charlie Stross); With a Little Help (short stories); and The Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow (novella and nonfic). I speak all over the place and I tweet and tumble, too.

Steven Page isn’t with Barenaked Ladies anymore.

    Fucking perfect!

How dare they have had idealism that they could make a better culture for children. Let’s make fun of them.

    • Matisse Enzer

Next up: making fun of “It gets better…”

I’m sure the south park crew has already thought of something.

It’s a really gentle parody that you could see as an update for the generation wholistened to the original.

Yes, I haven’t seen such bitter, scathing satire since the original Schoolhouse Rock.

      (Dude, come on.)

having idealism is valuable; unsupported idealism without direction leads to a generation of narcissists, though.

and that is the outcome of being raised by a generation of neurotics… ta-da!!!

    • FoolishOwl

I’m not sure that it’s a parody, exactly. Think about locked down schools for working class kids and middle class helicopter parents.

      IT’S O.K.!

ME (Who grew up in crummy little red-neck towns, went to bad public schools): I heard about the anniversary of this album called “Free To Be You And Me” on a podcast. Apparently it had all these songs about how it’s OK for boys to play with dolls and stuff.

MY GIRLFRIEND (Who grew up in upper middle class suburbs, went to high quality private schools): I loved that album when I was a kid! I listened to it all the time. You never heard of it?

ME: If I got caught listening to something like that when I was a kid, I would have gotten my ass kicked.

Don’t get the idea that this was some private school thing. I never heard the album but the movie was shown every year in public grade school. Granted, in Madison, WI, which is basically Portland with more snow.

i remember marlo thomas’s special airing in prime time on broadcast tv– not terribly upper-class, as it was free to anyone who had access to that channel at that time…

I hope I wasn’t the only one who, at first, thought “do stuff” was a euphemism for masturbation (instead of what I finally decided, a set of pretty much everything which also includes that).

    • http://profiles.google.com/marc.k.mielke Marc Mielke

I usually take “do stuff” as meaning use drugs, but thought it kind of obvious they didn’t mean that.

      • TheKaz1969

I dunno.. it IS Steven Page…

  • nixiebunny

“…unless feeling pressured is what you want to do.”

    Classic.

  • CLamb

A pity it has that one crude scatological word in it otherwise it would be delightful for children to watch.

    • Antinous / Moderator

      Children love crude scatological words.

      • http://www.youtube.com/user/Freethinkersanon Christopher

The worst joke I know is also the one I most enjoy telling children: “What’s brown and sounds like a bell? DUNGGG!”

The joke is terrible, but the reaction most children have to it is pure joy.

    • SamSam

It was so fast I don’t think any kids would even hear it or be interested. I would have no problem playing this to a three-year-old.
