Don't Squish the Sasquatch!

SasquatchI've been a fan of Bob Staake's illustration ever since David and I stumbled across his ABC and 123 books at SF Moma in 1998.

Bob's art is appealing in its simplicity, but it's also sophisticated and wry. No surprise that he has illustrated quite a few New Yorker covers. Bob's latest book is called Don't Squish the Sasquatch! and is intended to be read to children who are between 2 and 5 years old.

Author Kent Redeker tells the tales of a green sasquatch who boards a bus and begs the driver (Mr. Blobule) not to allow passengers on board who might squish him.The driver tries his best to comply with the sasquatch's request, but the subsequent passengers — an elephant shark, an octo-rhino, a goat-whale, etc. — are so voluminous they quickly crowd the bus and send the sasquatch into a fit. This being a children's story, it ends well for everyone.

If you have older children they will probably prefer Staake's wonderful Donut Chef, a book my 9-year-old and I still pull out from time to time and enjoy reading together.
