It is common for protesters in the U.S. to do a chant like this–
Leader: What do we want?
Protesters: Justice! (or Equality, or whatever that protest is about)
Leader: When do we want it?
Protesters: Now!

This mug makes a joke about people who love coffee so much that they are violent without it.
Leader: What do we want?
Protesters: Coffee!
Leader: When do we want it?
Protesters (wanting coffee NOW! No time for chanting!): I’ll fucking cut/stab/kill you!

The call and response part of this interests me. Since I have been a fan of ‘Buckaroo Bansai…’ and have friends who are as well, the related “Where are we going?” followed by “When are we going?” got a lot of milage.

But, seeing the same ‘straight answer’ then ‘humorous answer’, makes me wonder how far back does this go? What are some other examples of it?

No. See the issue here, is that sitting down and reading a book are not mutually exclusive actions. However both shutting up, and explaining the joke are as you can see, at odds as the direction of the first prohibits the second.

I was just reading Henry Rollins “Get In The Van”, his diary of 5 years on tour with Black Flag, and you can pinpoint where and when he became a “coffee achiever”: he’s in a coffee shop in Madison WI, and is amazed that the shop only serves coffee, and fancy tasty coffee at that (“Man this coffee is righteous!” he exclaims.) A year later when the Flag tours through Wisconsin again he hits up the same shop, orders a whole pot of coffee and when the waitress asks “How many cups with that?” he says “one”. . . she gives him a look and replies “have fun.”

Oh I agree, Boing Boing shouldn’t post a photo of a coffee mug with humorous text on it, because it is really offensive to people that can’t drink coffee. They should also never cover stories about gadgets that some people may not be able to afford, because that’s just rubbing their face in their poverty. Also stories about events in places where people can’t get to, that always upsets me because I’d like to be at those events.

Oh and I don’t want to see any more stories on people that are sensitive to mundane stuff like slogans on coffee cups because it makes me feel bad about how I judge those people as overly sensitive.

You know, there are people in this world with chronic ailments, which, though relatively “minor” compared to, say, cancer, also deny those people various luxuries of “normal” life. Like coffee. Posting things like this ruthlessly teases those people to no end.
