Ilford launches a new line of disposable cameras using its lovely line of black and white film. You can pick from XP2 or HP5, both at ISO 400. Sadly, no Delta 100! "Steven Brierley, the company’s director of marketing, says that Ilford regularly receives requests for 'retro style black and white film cameras' from 'digital users who now want the look of real black and white prints from a film negative.'" I wonder if you need a home darkroom to develop the prints?

Says you can send to Ilford for all sorts of neat processing.

        Huzzah!

Most people doing home dev have a film scanner – it’s amazing how flexible film can be.

Your local camera shop will do it for you too, and some pharmacies.

Link is screwed. Used to love revealing B&W films on Illford paper. It was just great being in a tiny bathroom, with all windows blacked out and the smell of the chemicals. Good ol’ times… Ah, the 90′s.

90s hell, I did that two years ago :) Bought a used Nikon F75 for peanuts. It has more options and features than my digital SLR!

Ohhh, HP5 was my jam. Nice to see it’s still around.

Be careful getting this developed.  Most places will just print out your B&W negatives onto colour photographic paper.  This cuts your resolution to 1/3rd of what it should be.  One of the whole points of B&W photography is that every “pixel” on your print only has to be of the kind that is on the Black -> White continuum.  On colour paper you have groups of three chemical “pixels” (usually one each of Red, Green and Blue) to make one visual dot on your print.  In the same space you could have three dots of Black and White “pixels”.

Good, because what we really need is more throw-away shit clogging landfills.

WTH is wrong with buying an OM-1 off eBay for $100 and shooting film through that?

“Disposable” is only the vernacular term for such cameras. They are not thrown away, but are refilled with film, the battery changed (if it has a flash), and then repackaged and resold. The disposable camera you buy in a store has been used many times.

Will they let me push it to 1600 ASA?

XP2 is C41-process film, so you can get that developed anywhere that still handles color film.  HP5 is genuine B&W and will push.

Any idea when these will be available in the US? The one store I found that would ship here charged 75 pounds to ship. A tad high given the cost of the camera.
