Mark Nixon's "MuchLoved" project collects photos of peoples' long-suffering toys, along with the stories behind them. It's a poignant collection of sentimental reminiscence and beautiful patinas and genteel decay.

MuchLoved (via Neatorama)

I write books. My latest is a YA science fiction novel called Homeland (it's the sequel to Little Brother). More books: Rapture of the Nerds (a novel, with Charlie Stross); With a Little Help (short stories); and The Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow (novella and nonfic). I speak all over the place and I tweet and tumble, too.

Jenny and her husband sleep with Brownie, and Brownie has never been washed?  Ewwwww.

I see a bunch of text spam links in red text at the bottom of his website.  What’s up with that?

As I was flipping through the pictures, I kept expecting to see a picture of Hobbes (from Calvin & Hobbes).

Absolutely precious. I have a 22-year-old baby blanket and a 12-year old teddy bear that belong in this collection… sadly had to stop sleeping with the blanket before it withered away completely. Might have to do that with the bear soon too, but they’re definitely staying in the bedroom!

Huh, I have a 30-year-old teddy bear that’d fit in with this set. Lots of bears represented – I guess everyone keeps theirs. :) Mine was just named ‘Teddy’ – like many others, I see as I page through the images.

I can imagine Brownie’s first words:

    ‘Please let me die’

Great mash-up of art and curation! I can only hope that people thinking of donating to museums see this! Museums want meaningful things, not just things of “beauty”. Also…please do NOT clean your stuff…curators and conservators will thank you! Used objects, as is, with their history…tell stories that will touch us all!

This exhibit reminds me SO much of an exhibit a museum I worked at had…of toys…in the weeks running up to Christmas. All the toys were old and worn..beautifully so. We had kids who came back over and over…they talked to the toys in the exhibit cases…magic!

There’s a book by Cheryl and Jeffrey Katz called “Dirty Wow Wow” that came out a couple years ago. Same kind of idea — really delightful little book. http://www.amazon.com/Dirty-Wow-Other-Love-Stories/dp/1580088325/
