There was a lot of debate between Shammai and Hillel about how the candles should be lit. Shammai went with the more literal interpretation while Hillel went the more poetic route, with the increasing light symbolizing growing hope. Also, it's just a depiction- a lot of menorahs have lions on them, and lions also aren't kosher. The question is, are mosasaurs kosher? After all, they live in the sea and have scales...
