Actually, a friend of mine used to send it back to the kitchen and ask for another one without cheese. And it WAS quite difficult to get the idea across in some italian restaurants. Pizze w/o cheese are not really a concept they are used to.

I’m picky and order stuff without tomatoes all the time. Sometimes they screw up and there’s tomatoes on it. I’ve never had the impression someone was being malevolent.

There’s a lot of allegens in cheese. I can sometimes eat some cheeses, but I get very sick for the next few days if it’s feta, for example.

I am Lactose Intolerant though I can manage a bit of cheese just not milk and cream. I personalty don’t like “cheese” on a burger so would ask for it without. The correct response is asking for one without the “cheese” anything else is dickish

Good friend of mine, after she discovered she has a peanut allergy, still had problems after eating at her grandmother’s house. Turns out Grandma just thought the trigger was visual and was chopping or grinding the nuts up before putting them in the recipe…

Of course the problem is usually the peanut oil, not the flesh.

Nothing in the linked article that I saw said that the person had an allergy, just that he ordered his food without cheese and was a huge asshole when he discovered cheese on it.

On a personal note I wish you luck in getting your food the way you want it when you dine away from home. I don’t envy you, it must give one pause to be so vulnerable to common food products.

I find that most cheeses don’t have enough milk sugar in them to aggravate my digestive system, but I merely have a low tolerance for lactose and not a complete intolerance – let alone a deadly allergy.

I once drove the woman playing Alice in Wonderland to tears with my lactose-fueled flatulence on the Tea Cup ride at Walt Disney World. She fled the scene gagging for air.

Poor thing.

Jay Rayner thinks people with food allergies are picky eaters. He probably thinks his diabetic guests are jerks for not trying the cake. If he cooked to feed his guests instead of his own ego them then maybe he wouldn’t feel so butt-hurt when somebody said no thanks to the gnocchi.

There needs to be a stronger penalty for people who disregard other people’s allergies. As someone with an egg and poultry allergy, restaurants will frequently tell me something is alright, only to find that I get a reaction.

Well, there are a lot of forms of lactose intolerance, milk allergy, this-triggers-severe-asthma, and this-triggers-severe-internal-bleeding. And there are inevitable mistakes. And there are jerks who deny allergies exist, or pretend allergies are some fashionable new fad, and deliberately slip the allergens and other triggers into the food. Since they don’t see the pain and bleeding, and since we tend to be so polite, maybe we need to be a lot less polite about this. And attacking her was wrong, but it’s one part in a chain of wrongness.
