Nitrome's Icebeak is a Cybernoid-style side-scrolling shooter with an interesting "freeze stuff" theme, loads of color and few pixels. It's not very difficult, either—great for the young ones. [via Indie Games]
I enjoy that you can play it at native resolution! Although it’s a little hard on the eyes.
Rob, or rather Mark, the previous posting to this poses the question: “What are cool and inexpensive home science experiments I can do to blow my child’s mind?”
However you’ve blocked everyone from commenting, is this an oversight?
I sometimes wonder now with the ubiquity of 8-bit style games how many are made that way due to a lack of artistic talent by the developers.

I love the pixel-art style for two reasons a) aesthetic, I actually do prefer it to plastic-looking hi res digital art and b) as a game designer, it does free me from being too dependent on an artist who always has something “better to do.” (usually sleeping, boozing or slaving at some miserly paid legit job that somehow takes precedence over our magnificent piece of pure creation)
Recently, I’ve come to prefer art coming only from two (seemingly) opposed ends of the spectrum – either hand drawn and scanned, grit and all, or exquisitely stitched together pixel by pixel. They’re both raw, and i find that appealing. Again, that disney/illustrator/whatever mellow polish that you can find in most games nowadays makes my stomach queasy. Like those cheapo disney illustrations that you feel were designed by robots in order not to offend the humans before the final reckoning. Bleh.
Nitrome’s got a ton of simple fun little games on their site. I liked the IceBreaker, Final Ninja and Toxic games. Yin Yang’s fun too.
