I write books. My latest is a YA science fiction novel called Homeland (it's the sequel to Little Brother). More books: Rapture of the Nerds (a novel, with Charlie Stross); With a Little Help (short stories); and The Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow (novella and nonfic). I speak all over the place and I tweet and tumble, too.

The older I get the more I realize how much I was shaped and saved by the fact that my mom did talk about death. She was a nurse for almost 35 years so she saw the worst the dying process had to offer but she didn’t want me afraid or unprepared for certain truths in life. So we had open and honest discussions long before I knew what death was. And many, many after I did. But I see how many people don’t do that and how they get blindsided by some things just because they never talked about it before it was something they had no choice to deal with. Death, dying, the whole thing and all it’s possibles. I’ve seen how many friends and family members had no idea what to do, what is normal, and so on, or had never had end of life discussions until a doctor is asking them. So I can’t stress enough how right she is, talk to your kids about it now and it will help them so much when they are adults. Do your best to make it as unscary as possible. Be honest. Answer the questions over and over again and have the conversation over and over again.

What does that matter in the face of him communicating his sexual wants to all of us? I mean, priorities.

Death is not something that can be handled or understood all you can say is live life for the happy moments!
