I, too thought “eh, this is a bit overplayed and obvious,” at first. but once it made me laugh — and mightily I did laugh — the spirit of utter ridiculousness carried the rest of the show. Plus, the clothes were awesome.

Wow… Anchorman is probably one of my all-time favourite comedies! I do not grok the hate!

I have the “Will Farrell is Funny” gene, which causes me to perceive Will Farrell as funny, whatever he does.

The original Anchorman was funny in a lowbrow way. Beer may enhance the effect.

I simply do not get what all the hype around Anchorman was/is. It’s such a broadly played schtick with zero subtlety that I didn’t laugh once.

I just couldn’t get past the lack of any counter balance to the characters’ dumbness- there is zero contrast (other than MORE dumbness).

I get that is what they wanted, and it works for a lot of people. It just left me flat- I don’t think I laughed once.

The crime was that a lot of talented people wasted their time on the original movie. Every SNL alumni thinks they are Christopher Guest, and if they just get a bunch of their pals together, magic will happen.
What made the Marx Brothers good was that they worked in Vaudeville. By the time a routine went into a movie, they might have refined it during a hundred live performances.
