Poe Astronaut on Howard St.

I write books. My latest is a YA science fiction novel called Homeland (it's the sequel to Little Brother). More books: Rapture of the Nerds (a novel, with Charlie Stross); With a Little Help (short stories); and The Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow (novella and nonfic). I speak all over the place and I tweet and tumble, too.

The technology that links taxonomy and Star Trek

    I just knew it wasn’t River in the spacesuit.  Finally, I am vindicated.

  • PlutoniumX

    I love that a lot.

  • falnfenix

    thought i recognized that.  yay TOVEN.

  • angrygoldfish

    Very cool, but… Edgar “Allen” Poe? Any relation to Carey Doctorow or Jake Kerouac?

    I always thought he was a bit of a space cadet.

      Just give’m a Space-Rifle and he could administer some of that there Poe’s Law they’re always talking about in these parts.

      The Unparalleled Adventure of One Hans Pfaall
      was his attempt to craft a relatively “realistic” – or at least somewhat internally consistent – trip to the moon using (mostly) the technology available at the time (i.e. a balloon filled with gaseous unobtanium).  It is an interesting curiosity, if not particularly riveting.

  • fuzzyfuzzyfungus

    Isn’t Poe the one who wrote a poem about our timeline for returning to the moon? I think it had a bird in it…

       You’re thinking of Die Antwoord.

    • hymenopterid

      That’s a rather crass outlook.

  • Brainspore

    Mission Control will be monitoring his health with the Telltale Pulse Monitor.

  • llimllib

    Neat! But that’s not in Station North, that’s downtown at Howard and Franklin.

    • Scott Conroy

      Correct – tis only a few blocks from where I live.   Good to see the ‘hood on Boing Boing!  Now Cory just needs to come back to Baltimore for a book signing!  Red Emma’s one more time, Cory?

  • nicholas1987

    Looks more like Matthew Mcconaughey…

    And the shuttle, never flitting, still is sitting, still is sitting
    On the pallid slab of concrete just beyond the hangar door;
    And her engines still seem yearning to cross the sky with fire burning,
    And the lamp-light o’er her streaming throws her shadow on the floor;
    And my spacecraft, a hollow husk of what it was in days of yore;
    Shall be lifted – nevermore!

    • Roose_Bolton

      Quoth the comments – yay Brainspore!

    “The thousand injuries of Commander Bowman I had borne as I best could; but when he ventured upon jeopardizing the mission, I vowed revenge.”

  • Brainspore

    In other spacesuit-related news today, NASA just unveiled a new prototype suit that looks like Buzz Lightyear’s. Which is awesome.

    “Think we can rely on Poe in the Command Module?  It’s gonna be pretty lonely out there on the dark side of the moon.”

    “Nah, Poe’s as solid as a rock.  I’ve never known anybody less prone to morbid thoughts than my buddy Eddie “Allen Key” Poe!”

  • http://www.facebook.com/jehouse61 Julie House

    Edgar ALLAN Poe would have worn a spacesuit that was much more retronaut…a steampunk suit. Now that I wanna see!

  • showme

    I kind of thought that look like Ron Jeremy in there. I don’t even want to think about the implications of that (or what it says about my mental state.)
