This magnificent raw turkey cake (orange and rum spice cake) was created by London's Sarah Hardy. Yum!

Raw Turkey Christmas Cake

I write books. My latest is a YA science fiction novel called Homeland (it's the sequel to Little Brother). More books: Rapture of the Nerds (a novel, with Charlie Stross); With a Little Help (short stories); and The Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow (novella and nonfic). I speak all over the place and I tweet and tumble, too.

She’s obviously never had campylobacter or salmonella.

Campylobacter? Is that Julian Clary dressed up as a brain?

Whenever I see these sculptural cakes I really wonder if they taste good.    All that fondant and extraneous material doesn’t seem all that appetizing.  The best tasting cakes I have ever eaten have been plain and simple.  (I really can’t imagine ever wanting to eat one of those sculpted cakes they now base TV shows around.)

Anyone have any experience with these ?  Any blind taste testing?

    • eeyore

Normally, I’d agree, but that may not have to be fondant in this case.  A nice thick glaze poured over it could net a very similar effect.  The cake appears to have some kind of red outer coating, and you get the fleshy pink show through by varying the thickness – which would seem to be easier with a glaze than with fondant sheet… or so I can hope, anyway.

      • BunnyShank

         Because fondant tastes like ass.

        • nvlady

It is a raw bird, perhaps that is the taste they were going for?

  • Wingnut

Ooh, now I just have to make an angel food cake out of raw turkey meat!
    Well, maybe not…

Just because you can doesn’t mean you should. See http://allrecipes.com/recipe/kitty-litter-cake/

I… I think I would have difficulty eating that. Or at least, taking the first bite.

People are just so cool. They keep making my world better each day.

why couldn’t they have made one that looks baked?

    • Boundegar

      Spite.

    • Antinous / Moderator

Making the cake itself chocolate would probably do that.

  • SuperMatt

Cory, in regards to your use of the word “magnificent” to describe this cake: that word might not mean what you think it means!

  • awjt

I hope the legs/thighs are dark meat, aka, chocolate cake…

  • Preston Sturges

It really needs ice cream “stuffing.”
