Reddit has a different algorithm to sort comments. It was explained by BB-favorite Randall Munroe (author of XKCD) in a post on their blog. I find it even more fascinating, as it tries to calculate the absolute value of a comment with confidence rising as it gets more votes.
Edit: oops, I misremembered it. Munroe didn’t write the algorithm, he just wrote the post explaining it.
Boy, I wish I understood this math. Then I might understand why so much boring/racist/sexist crap ends up on the front page.
