My Great Ghost, "Glass Machine"—remixing Philip Glass, with an app

Scott Snibbe, the developer for Björk’s "Biophilia" app, has developed an iOS app for the Philip Glass remix project—the app is titled REWORK_.

Here is a video of My Great Ghost, whose remix of "Music in 12 Parts" is the first track on the record, performing an entirely new track using the app.

The studio has built a REWORK app that includes interactive visualizations corresponding to 11 of the remix songs with visuals that range from futuristic three-dimensional landscapes to shattered multicolored crystals and vibrating sound waves. The app also includes an interactive “Glass Machine” that allows users to create their own music inspired by Philip Glass’ early works by simply sliding two discs around side-by-side, generating polyrhythmic counterpoints between the two melodies.

“This is a way for people who don’t have the experience of manipulating music material to see what it's like,” says Glass.

  Sadly, Einstein on the Beach is not part of the remix materials. Haven’t played with the REWORK app yet, but can heartily recommend the CD: Orange Mountain Music’s REWORK_ Philip Glass Mixes by Beck, Amon, Tobin, Cornelius, etc.. Also available on vinyl.

  PS–I was lucky enough to see the recent production of Einstein on the Beach at BAM.  I did it.  All.  Without a bathroom break.  Worth it.

   I was very disappointed by that Björk album/app. Nor can I blame Björk, though the album was bad enough that I not only didn’t go pay AGAIN to have the MP3s, but I never even bothered to find a torrent of it. I found the app to be a huge failure considering it’s price point… and look, here it is again; an app for 10$ based around the enigmatic music of someone with talent. But I do think this looks interesting – and I do already own the album… but 10$? No, I’ve been burned by this guy before and this is too expensive for an app of this type.

  This guy has to make some apps at regular app prices for me to give him another chance at ripping me off again. Because I do still feel burned by that Björk pos.
