Book picks from Mark, Jane (9), and Sarina (15)

In this special Superb Owl Sunday Family Channel podcast my daughters Jane (9), Sarina (15), and I shared a pan of Jiffy Pop and talked about books.

What we are reading now:

Mark: Game of Thrones, by George R. R. Martin

Sarina: The Postmortal, by Drew Magary

Jane: Frederick Douglass: Young Defender of Human Rights, by Elisabeth P. Myers

Favorite books:

Mark: The Treasure of the Sierra Madre, by B. Traven

Sarina: The Outsiders, be S. E. Hinton

Jane: By the Great Horn Spoon! by Sid Fleischman

  1. I think I read The Outsiders once a month between 13 and 16. Still one of my favorite books. Good choice Sarina. Passing along The Postmortal to my daughter. It sounds right up her alley.

  2. Let me put in a word for Floors by Patrick Carman. It’s a brilliant Dahl-esque fantasy that has our whole family obsessed. He’s already written a sequel and more are on the way. Great fun!

  3. Currently reading The Silmarillion.  There’s some great pieces of story in it for those with the patience to slog through the incredibly dull bits.

  4. Whenever I see “The Outsiders” mentioned anywhere, I instantly think of Colin Wilson’s “The Outsider” (the titles are similar, right?) which is packed with just about as much art, culture and intrigue as any book I know. Wilson’s known for covering more occult topics, but that shouldn’t be an impediment for anyone thinking about reading this classic book of his

  5. This made me wonder if the 1967 Disney theatrical film based on BY THE GREAT HORN SPOON!, THE ADVENTURES OF BULLWHIP GRIFFIN (Roddy McDowell), was out on DVD.   And it is.
