Yeah, I'm currently doing the "mid-range laptop with second monitor/keyboard/mouse" thing and it's fine when I only take my laptop home for the weekend (or at night to do a couple of extra hours of work) but it's not the best for when I'm on call and have to have access 24/7 (in the bar, at the beach, in a box, with a fox, etc.). That's the real reason that I've been looking for a tablet, so I don't develop back problems from that one week a month when I need to have access to IE at-all-times-no-matter-what.

I prefer the Kindle Fire HD. The interface is great and it's very easy to use. Check out its Amazon page http://amzn.to/11SRHbE if you want to compare what they bring to the table.

Lenovo X series.

I picked up a used 4GB C2D X61 for $120, got a deal on a 500GB HDD for another $40.

Dual booting linux and windows, it's a fantastic computer. Never owned a better one in my life, much prefer it even to the new MacBook Air I had last year.

Of course, you have to get used to the trackpoint..which I absolutely adore for it's two axis scrolling.

Disappointed in the cradle; it should provide some extra ports. Combine that with a better keyboard and a decent mouse, and it might make a passable basic desktop/tablet crossover.

Personally though, I feel that if it's going to run Windows, it should come with an attached keyboard/pointer combo.

My personal one is a beast but any large screen laptop is. 7.14lbs per specs on the web but then 70% of the time I am not lugging it anywhere. It more of a portable pc. I wouldn't want to lug it around all day every day but it is nice to take out of the office and sit elsewhere in the house and watch movies or play torchlight.

My work machine though is 4.25lbs and has a 14 inch screen, but even when I take it to the office once a week it gets a second monitor plugged in and a proper keyboard and mouse hooked up though I don't pack all that with me. Just the laptop, power brick and odds and ends that stay in the bag for the most part. I don't notice it much and for my work use I think that is as small a screen as I want to deal with.

This tablet if the hardware is solid is probably cheaper than an equivalent business class laptop.

How heavy is your laptop, though? Semi-serious question, I'm looking for something to toss in my bag that I can carry around all day without needing to go to the chiropractor after. Only real requirements are a) lightweight and b) Windows-based (I hate it but I have to use IE for my job, so Android/Linux/iOS aren't really options).

UMPC killer? Is it possible to kill something that's already dead? Maybe there are Zombie UMPCs shambling around the Acer campus and this is the only way to kill them.

And my now almost a year old laptop is beefier and was less than that and I went for a dedicated graphics card and 17" screen, Is the touch screen interface that expensive?

That does look to be a step in the right direction for a proper working tablet for a basic office enterprise environment. Not sure it would work for what I end up with day to day though.
