I don’t think it would be very difficult to control the giraffe population. They are kind of easy to spot, even from a distance.

I was about to disagree with you but honestly? Yeah, a grizzly might go for a giraffe calf, if their habitats were close enough together. Full grown giraffe? Fuggetaboutit. In the end, if giraffe meat is as delicious as rumor has it, we already know who the top predator is going to be. . .

I see absolutely no downside to a lion ranch, whatsoever. Why, with the right loose zoning laws, it could easily go near a nondescript suburban neighborhood, orphanage, or perhaps a retirement home.

As for vast giraffe ranches, after the Oryx debacle in New Mexico, Game and Fish Departments are leery of importing any foreign species that lacks a comparable North American top predator. Ain’t no wolf or wildcat gonna be takin’ down a giraffe.

I visited SA in 1995 and was (lucky?) enough to have been invited to a restaurant outside Johannesburg called “the Train”, and which received cull from the Kruger Park. Yes, laid out before us was all manner of dead critter: wildebeast, elephant, zebra, mopane worms, and…giraffe. With the exception of the mopane worms, which tasted much the way one might expect large mutant worms to taste, it was all pretty tasty, but the giraffe – dear god – was SO SCRUMPTIOUS.

Since then, I’ve often wondered why there aren’t vast giraffe ranches in, say, Texas.
