Sinkane, Usher… and the Afghan Whigs

On Friday, my friends in the Afghan Whigs performed at SXSW with special surprise guests Usher and Sinkane. It may seem like an unlikely combo but the Whigs's indie rock has always been drenched in soul and R&B. Above is video of that musical extravaganza. I'm a bit late to the Sinkane party but the video below for his track "Runnin'," from the album Mars, is absolutely smoking. Previously known as Ahmed Gallab, the Sudanese-born musician has toured extensively as a multi-instrumentalist with the likes of Of Montreal and Caribou.

  1. One of my favorite bands, and after all these years still a great show. The video of this reminds me of when I saw them a few months ago in Boston… it seems recently it takes them a few tracks to get in the groove when playing live.  In this case its the (really excellent) cover of Lovecrimes that really sets the pace for the show rather than the prior tracks.
So glad they decided to start playing together again while continuing to do their individual projects like the Twilight Singers.

  2. I loved the Afghan Whigs performance.  Usher . . . not so much.  I would have been a little disappointed if I had been at the show, as more Usher meant less of Greg and the Whigs.

    1.  Well, de gustibus and all that. I had to fast-forward to the part where Usher comes in and then had to stop listening because the backup band didn’t seem to have any sense of dynamics and were drowning him out. Meh.
