Two-headed bull shark

A Gulf of Mexico fisherman opened the uterus of an adult bull shark and found a two-headed shark pup inside. According to Michigan State University researchers, this is the first two-headed bull shark confirmed by scientists. ""Given the timing of the shark's discovery with the Deepwater Horizon oil spill, I could see how some people may want to jump to conclusions," Michael Wagner, MSU assistant professor of fisheries and wildlife, wrote in a report in the Journal of Fish Biology. "Making that leap is unwarranted. We simply have no evidence to support that cause or any other." (EurekAlert!)

  1. Wow — is there a name for variation of the Streisand effect? Was anyone suggesting a link between this and Deepwater Horizon before the professor mentioned it?

    1. You took the words right out of my brain, including “Streisand Effect.” I never would have thought of a two-headed shark being related to Deepwater Horizon if they hadn’t brought it up.

      1. That’s odd, because it was the first thing I thought of when I saw the headline.  Something tells me Corexit and sealife don’t get along too well.

    2. I’d say that its “Ironic process theory” the same kind of effect from saying something like “Don’t think of a pink elephant.” having the opposite effect. I’m sure the researcher was responding to something that he had heard speculation on, but it is funny that it has the opposite effect.
